I have been trying to download the V6 trial but have been unsuccessful due to the following:-
setup was unable to create directory
error 2
I have cleared the cache etc. but no success.
Would purchasing the CD version guarantee success or would I be met with the same fault.

When you ran the installation program, did you use the option "Run as administrator"?

Yes I tried that method I also tried disabling anti virus prog but no success. It really is my intention to purchase the program on cd but require assurance that it will install correctly.

Can you give us more info about what environment you're installing it -- Windows version for a start.
Any recent Windows upgrades?
I'm assuming (as you haven't mentioned it) that you've had no problems trying to install other programmes?

Have you checked that you can see C:\Users\alexl\Document ? Have you made any changes to the location of your Documents folder?
You might find it worth contacting the Software Developers Calico Pie direct at

The directories exist and have not been moved. I will try the link you provided

The CD and download installation files are identical, so paying extra for a CD will NOT help.
It is an unusual problem, that has not been reported before.
Presumably you are logged in as alexl ?
Is that an Administrator privileged account ?
Can you create a folder within C:\Users\alexl\Documents manually using File Explorer while logged into the same account as you are using for installation of FH?
You could try Safe Mode and other tactics as explained in how_to:family_historian_installation_problems|> Family Historian Installation Problems.

Hi to all respondents,
Following Mikes suggestion I was able to install using safe mode.

In Safe Mode only essential Windows OS processes are running and all non-Windows applications inhibited.
That suggests some non-Windows application is preventing FH from creating the Family Historian Projects folder when running in normal mode.
It would be useful to know what application you have installed that might be the culprit.
It is likely to be some anti-malware product.

The only malware program is Malwarebytes which I disabled on one installation tryout but the result was the same. I have the program running but it won't allow me create a new project see attachment the directory does exist.

This sounds like a permissions issue. You do not have rights to edit create in that folder.

What is the current project location set to (I can't see from the image as it's concealed below the error message). Do you have access permissions to that location?
What happens if you change that location (More Tasks button > Project List >Choose Location for Projects)?

Yes, it sounds like a file permissions problem and goes back to my earlier question that you didn't explicitly answer:-
Can you create a folder within C:\Users\alexl\Documents manually using File Explorer while logged into the same account as you are using when installing/running FH?
In File Explorer right-click on folders C:\Users\alexl\Documents and C:\Users\alexl\Documents\Family Historian Projects.
Choose Properties and then the Security tab.
The top two Group or user names should be SYSTEM and your login username, e.g. Alexl (PCNAME\alexl)
The Permissions for ... both those should have Allow ticked for Full Control, etc.

Alternately, try clicking on the blue link at the base of the Project window and selecting the folder manually using a folder which you have other documents in. Can you still not create a Project?

Thanks to all, I have managed to get the trial working with access to all folders and also creating new ones where necessary.
