Transfers between projects

Post by londonscorpion » 25 Nov 2018 15:11

What is is the best way to transfer (copy) 20 or so individuals (together with their notes, places, sources and media etc) from one project to another. Is there perhaps a plugin?

Context: I have one main project with over 1500 individuals and I just need to put 20 of these into a second project.

Use the File>Export option to select the 20 people.

Then merge the exported file into the new Project. From memory I think it will pick up and copy the media over to the new Project.

See how_to:exporting_gedcom_with_multimedia|> Exporting a Family Tree with/without Media.

Use the File > Import/Export > Export > GEDCOM File command and select those 20 Individuals as explained in that Export to Create/Merge Projects advice.

If you are creating a new Project of just those 20 Individuals then Merge is not required.

Works like a dream for the export of the 20 individuals BUT includes not only their media and sources etc. but of everyone else in the project. Not what I need.

What to do?

Another question: does this method import the associated media files?

If you kept the default settings when you exported the Gedcom, the 'Exclude' section should have Unconnected Records ticked. This will exclude unwanted media and sources.

Re the second question, the linked media folders and files will be copied automatically when you create a new project from the Gedcom, as long as you follow the advice in the link Mike gave:
Save the GEDCOM file in the ….fh_data folder adjacent to that Public folder, so that the exported file sits next to the Project master GEDCOM file.
When this exported GEDCOM file is used to create or merge into another Project, its linked Media folders & files should get copied across automatically and retain the original folder hierarchy.

Sounds like you did not read and inwardly digest the advice I referred you to? :?: :?

Especially about Unconnected Records and the migration of Media.
