Hi,
I downloaded and use Brian's Icons on my diagrams. I have tried to produce one for the 1939 register but to no avail. I was wondering if one of you clever users would be willing to create a 39 icon in the same style for me.

I have downloaded the .txt, into my downloads file. Not being very PC literate can you advise how I change the extension to .bmp please. My system will allow me to open it in notepad, but I cannot see how to edit or save as a .bmp.

Yes, it might be tricky if you have default settings.

Open Windows File Explorer to view the folder you downloaded the file to.
On the View tab, tick File name extensions towards the right.
That will show files with their extension, i.e. Census39.txt

Now right-click on the Census39.txt file and choose Properties.
At the top, click to the right of the .txt extension and alter it to .bmp then click OK (ignore the dire warning).

I strongly advise that you move that Census39.bmp file to the C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\Icons folder.
You should also put all the Brian's Icons you want to use in that same folder.
Then you will need to redefine them in your Diagram > Options > Boxes tab.

BTW:
In future, with File name extensions ticked, you can alter the extension immediately in the download dialogue.

I have added this Census39 icon to Brian's and Jane's icons in the FHUG Downloads.

I've managed to download the 1939 icon into my folder with the rest of Jane's icons that I use but how do I get it to show with the others under the boxes in my diagram. The census ones appear automatically but the ones for BMD have the Type Birth, Marriage or Death put in the Type box, so do I have to type something in the Type box for the 1939 icon? All my census sources are just called 1841 Census etc. and I just have the one source for all, the 1939 source is called 1939 Register again I just have the one source. I must have linked everything up once upon a time but I can't remember now how I did it, can you help please. Thanks.

Thank you for your help Mike. Went in and un-hide the file extension and amended the file.

Margaret, are you looking at the Diagram > Options > Boxes tab?
That will have a list of Conditions in the upper pane.

As you select each one it will show their Features in the lower pane, sometimes on multiple tabs.
What exactly is shown for the ones you are interested in?

If you can post a screenshot it would help.

You had a similar issue with Twin Icon for Diagrams (15968).

From your BMD Icons in Diagrams (13252) posting it is clear that you are using Expression Conditions.
So I suspect the Census Expressions use INDI.CENS[year=1871] style reference as part of the Expression.
So for the 1939 Register use INDI.CENS[year=1939] reference instead.

Hello Mike, Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my query, I've used the Expression INDI.CENS[year=1939] as you suggested and although it seems to be the same as all the other Census Expressions it doesn't appear on the diagram under the box. Any further help would be appreciated, I do seem to get in a muddle when I try to do anything remotely different from just entering names.

Sorry forgot to say that I have changed the Source name from 1939 Register to 1939 Census.

The following all applies to the Diagram > Options > Boxes tab.

If you're happy the Condition Expression is OK, have you used Edit Features to tick Icon and <<Select the Census.bmp file?
Use another Condition Expression for a Census Year as a model and mimic that.

If in any doubt about the Condition Expression then select it and click Delete Condition>> and start again.
Presumably, you have a Condition Expression for each Census from 1851 to 1911.
I imagine you have chosen one of them, clicked Edit Condition, and on the highlighted Expression used right-click Copy.
Cancel that and use <<Add Condition > Expression then right-click Paste to copy original Expression.
Edit the year index to [1939] and if necessary the SOUR>TITL text to 1939 Census, then click OK.
In the Box Features dialogue tick Icon and <<Select the Census.bmp file and click OK.

I am guessing that your Expression will look like:
=IsTrue( %INDI.CENS[year=1939].SOUR>TITL% = "1939 Census" )

If it still does not work then please insert a copy of your Expression in your Reply here.

Hi Mike, Sorry to be a bother, I've tried what you said and copied the Expression =IsTrue( %INDI.CENS[year=1939].SOUR>TITL% = "1939 Census" ) that you put above, I also tried copying one of my other expressions (%INDI.CENS[year=1861]%), but nothing seems to work I still don't get the Icon under the box on the diagram (I did change 1861 to 1939) and the 39 Icon is in the section under the Expression Box just as they appear in all the other Expressions all of which work fine, it just seems to be this 39 one that I can't get right.

Could the problem be that instead of using the Census Fact I set up a new one called 1939 Register?

Yes, that was going to be my next question.
If you have not used the standard Census Event (CENS tag) the Expression won't work.

See how_to:recording_census_records|> Recording from a Census Record for advice.
If you don't use the standard Census Event (CENS tag) then several other useful features don't work, and as you have found it confuses the method of adding Icons, etc.

So you now have a decison to make:

1. Keep your 1939 Register custom Fact, manage without those other useful features, and adapt the Condition Expression to detect your custom Fact.
2. Convert your 1939 Register custom Facts to the standard Census Event (CENS tag), which can still be customised to say 1939 Register instead of Census.

Which is it to be?

Hello Mike, oh dear I do make life difficult for me (and you who manages to work out my problems and rescue me), I have 633 Citations in my custom fact, is there an easy way to convert all of them into a Census Fact perhaps keeping the sentence wording which substitutes 'Census' for '1939 Register'?

I do hope that your 1939 Register Facts all have 29 Sep 1939 set as the Date, otherwise the customisation below won't work. If that Date has NOT been used, then DO NOT DO ANYTHING YET until I explain how to fix that.

Use the Change Any Fact Tag Plugin and follow the advice in plugins:help:change_any_fact_tag:change_any_fact_tag|> Change Any Fact Tag Plugin to set the Source Tag to your Custom 1939 Register fact, and set the Target Tag to the Standard Census event. Then click the right-hand large green button to convert one to the other.
Are you familiar with downloading and running Plugins?

Then in Tools > Fact Types you can delete your redundant 1939 Register custom fact.

Hi Mike, you're a dream, thank you so much for that, I've even managed to change the sentence in the Fact Types, I've checked a few entries and they all seem ok, just one little blip, I worked on a copy of my database and deleted the Fact Type which meant that when I returned to my original database to repeat it all I had no Source Tag to use, I assume that I can safely delete my original database and continue to work on the copy.

Yes, or you should be able to obtain the Source Tag via Source Tag Set: <Custom Facts> for Facts not defined in a Fact Set.

The Source Tag Name will look something like EVEN-1939_REGISTER.
