Problem with opening project

Post by sphillips » 29 Oct 2018 21:05

i'm running windows 10 & office 365. FH is set to open in onedrive. I'm running version 6.2.7. I can see my files, but when I try to open FH, what I get has no records. I emailed the mailing list, & was advise to send screenshots here. I haven't tried this before, so I hope it works. Stella Phillips

There seems to be nothing wrong with the Project as clearly indicated by the heading across top of main FH window.
SP6 - Family Historian Project - [Records]
Another clue is that two Named Lists have many Items and the Queries list is unique to your Project.

Somehow the View > Navigation Bar option has been cleared, so enable that.
Then use its Focus Window button to show the Focus Window pane.

You have set FH to open the Records Window instead of Focus Window by default.
See Tools > Preferences > Startup > Display the Records Window...

Back on the Records Window, hover the cursor on left-hand edge of Named List pane until double headed arrow, and then click and drag right to reveal Records list pane. Alternatively, just close the Named List pane using Lists > Named Lists Pane.

I promised that the screenshots would solve the problem when we can see what you can see.
Have you any idea how all those display settings would have got customised into that state?

When satisfied that all is OK, we can review other topics such as Backup/Restore and Family Historian Sample Project.

Problem solved! thank you very much - very simple, once you realize what has happened. I do ususally open in the records window, not the focus window. I think what has happened is that I have accidentally changed my normal display. It has happenen before, just not quite so drastically. I'm working under a slight handicap at the moment as I have recently had a 2nd cataract op. Once I get my new glasses, things should improve, as I should be able to see both the screen & the keyboard!

OK Stella, I've also had cataract ops with brilliant success. :D
Your description partially explains some of the symptoms.
Had you also hidden the Navigation Bar by accident?

In the [FHU] Email list you suggested you got an error message saying file path not valid.
Can you recall anything about that?

I suggest you use File > Project Window > More Tasks > Samples > Reset Sample Project to create the Family Historian Sample Project that not only illustrates many useful features, but also acts as a model Project structure for comparison with your own Project.

In the [FHU] Email list you said you had trouble restoring a backup file.
It is advisable to perform a Backup Recovery so you are familiar with how it works.
Otherwise, creating Project Backups is a rather pointless exercise.
Use File > Backup/Restore > Restore Backup and select any FH Project Backup file.
e.g. FH Project Backup - SP6 - 2018-09-07 1234.zip
Then click Open to restore that Zipped File (.zip).
Confirm the New Project Name as SP6 (2) (or any name you prefer) and click the Restore button.
Then use File > Project Window to open the restored SP6 (2) project.
When satisfied you understand the process, it can be deleted by selecting SP6 (2) and using More Tasks > Delete Project, tick Please confirm deletion and click Delete All.
