Work with flags...

Marking individuals by flag for any reason seems to be a smart feature, I have couple of questions how to use it properly:

First, if I mark a person with a flag, can I check/find the fact that he/she is flagged anywhere on the user interface (focus window, details page)?

In the Record flags window, I can add new flags, but where/how can I remove them if they become unnecessary?

Thanks,
Peter

Peter,
In the individual’s property box, in the All tab, you find their associated flags listed towards the bottom. You can highlight a flag there, and press Delete key to remove one.
Not being on my PC at present, I’m don’t remember the correct way to delete a Flag in its entirity. :D

Hi Mike,

Thank you for the quick reply. Finally, I found the record of the flag on the All tab, however, I thought there was a chance to make it visible on a better recognized place, for example somewhere on the focus window or the main tab of the property box.
Now I can also remove the flag from an individual, but still don't have any idea how I can remove a custom flag that I have added to the flag list but I don't need it anymore.

Thanks,
Peter

If you want to remove a flag completely because it is no longer used anywhere, use Tools > Work with Lists and Flags. Select the Record flag in question and click Flag Status. Then untick Always include this record flag in flags list (if it is currently ticked). When FH is closed and reopened the unused flag will no longer be there.

Hi Lorna,

Thank you for the suggestion, it worked for me, now I get rid of the unused flags.

Thanks again,
Peter

Peter, can you help us give you the best answers by stating the Version of FH you are using.
Click your username pmolnar top right of this web page and choose User Control Panel.
Then on its Profile tab, select your Family Historian Version, and scroll down to click Submit.

There is advice in how_to:using_flags_and_icons_and_expressions|> Using Flags and Icons and Expressions that gives the answers given earlier, and offers some other suggestions.

If you have a recent version of FH, then Record Flags can be added into a Custom Tab of the Property Box.
A few could be added to the Main tab.
BUT in many cases Record Flags are often not needed and expressions are better.

Hi Mike,

I set the current FH version of mine in the profile option.

Thanks for the tips for using expressions. I tried to put the flags to custom tabs or the main tab but I didn't find the way how to do it. Can you please explain what I need to do exactly?

Regards,
Peter

OK, use the Property Box cog Menu > Customize Data Entry and checkout the Help button advice.
Also see how_to:v4:property_dialogue_in_v4|> Property Box Dialogue Features video (but some details have changed a bit since V4).

There is a ready made customisation for Living & Private flags you can add.

But to add your custom Flags is rather more technical.
Untick Show most commonly-use items only and add a <Custom Item> from top of the list.
Select Main area for Individual and click OK.
Give it a Custom Item Name then tick Part 1 and set the Label to your Flag name.
Now click <<Select and choose your Flag Data Reference.
Repeat that process for Part 2 to add a second Flag.

Repeat the whole process from scratch for each extra pair of Flags.

However, if you add too many, the Property Box Main tab will get too large.

So instead, in the original Customize Property Box dialogue, use More Tab Tasks > New Tab to create a custom tab and add as many Flags as you like using the same technique as above.

If you don't like any of this customisation it can easily be undone by deleting the items you added.
