Is it possible to change the diagram printing from across the page to vertical?

Not exactly sure what you mean.
However, look at Diagram > Options > General tab Orientation and Print tab Orientation.
I am sure those features are covered in the book Getting the Most From Family Historian.

Maybe you are looking for one of the Diagram variants shown under View > Standard Diagram Types.
The Descendant, Pedigree and Bow Tie Charts all print in a horizontal aspect, which is what I think you may be after.
