Attach sources elsewhere

Post by SpencerDudeUK » 28 Aug 2018 10:21

I'm getting on great with FH - it's a really good program. I do have a couple of things perhaps I'm not getting hold of though.
I've been used to resourcing all aspects of the data I input, and it doesn't seem to be possible to do one or two things...
1) Add a resource to an alternative name, to show where you got it from...
2) Add a resource to an address or a place (e.g., a map), so that you don't have to add that resource (or in fact remember you have one!) to each instance of use of that place/address. In other words, tie the resource to the address, or place, etc., so that it travels with it when you assign it to a person.

Of course, it could be that I'm missing something, which is why I'm posting it here first, as I know you guys will be able to point me in the right direction... :)

1. This is easy use the All tab select the Name field and right click and select Add Source.
2. You can add Images to Places, which is where I put Maps, you can't currently add sources. You can not add sources to Addresses, as they do not currently exist as records, so you need to add the images or sources to the Facts.

1) To add a Source citation for an alternative name, open the yellow Source pane attached to the Property box and use the drop-down menu in the Sources for: field to select Name [2] or Name [3] etc. If there are no alternative names there will be only one Name field in the list.

2) Picture, maps, and notes can be added direct to a Place Record via its Property box.
However addresses are more complex, if you use the address field to hold more specific details. One solution is to create a Source record for a specific building, for example, and enter information in the note field and attach photos. But, as you say, you need to remember that you have that Source and cite it whenever you use that address. Another solution, adopted by some users, is to enter all address information in the Place field so that you have a separate Place record for every single address. The drawback of this method is that you may end up duplicating a lot of information and maps/photos which are of a more general nature applicable to the village/town/city as a whole.

  1. Also when entering/selecting the Alternate Name via the more (+)... Names & Titles dialogue, the yellow Sources For pane identifies Name[n] (as mentioned by Lorna) and supports Add Citation.
  2. Although you cannot add a Source Citation to a Place record, you can to a Place field via the All tab.
But that would have to be copied to each identical Place name.
BTW: Such Source Citations do NOT appear in Reports under the Sources section.
