I am related to a person in my database via 2 different sets of common ancestors. One of the relationships puts us as 3rd cousins twice removed and the other as 4th cousins twice removed.

I am using a text scheme which includes 'Related to the File Root' in order to generate text for the relationship.

When I use =Relationship(FileRoot(),%INDI%,TEXT,1) as my expression, the relationships display as expected.

But when I use =Relationship(FileRoot(),%INDI%,TEXT,2) to get the more distant relationship, the relationships are displayed in only 3 boxes, those of my 'cousin' and her parents. The relationship information for the other boxes is not displayed.

Am I doing something wrong?

Shoshana, FH is displaying exactly what you requested.
The Help for the =Relationship(...) function says for Parameter 4:

A number indicating whether you want information about the closest relationship binding the 2 people, the 2nd closest relationship, the 3rd closest relationship, or whichever. Use a value of 1, here, to represent the closest relationship, 2 to represent the 2nd closest, and so on.

So if 4th parameter is 2, FH will show the 2nd closest relationship, which for most people will be nothing.
What exactly do you want displayed?
Do you want all relationships, or the least closest relationship, or what?

Hi,

I am related to this person via 2 separate relationships.

When I select the second option (4th parameter = 2) then most of the boxes in the diagram do not display the relationship.

The relationship is displayed in only 3 boxes -- those of my cousin (the person I'm related to) and her parents.

I want the relationship to be displayed in all of the boxes.

A useful tool for this if you are working on selections is to use the how related tool to show specific routes between people and place several on to the same diagram.

Hi,

I am using 2 custom Text Schemes, which include the Name and Relationship to File Root

If I am working with somebody to whom I am related through a single path, I use the scheme with the following expression for 'Relationship to File Root'

= Relationship(FileRoot(),%INDI%,TEXT,1)

If I am working with somebody to whom I am related through more than one path (so far I've worked with 2 paths, but I have uncovered some when I'm related along 3 paths -- I'll deal with it when I come to it), I need to pay attention to the distance of the relationship.

If they are the same, then I can use the first expression. But, if they are not, then I use the following expression when generating the diagram for the more distant relationship:

=TextIf(Relationship(FileRoot(),%INDI%,TEXT,2) = "",Relationship(FileRoot(),%INDI%,TEXT,1),Relationship(FileRoot(),%INDI%,TEXT,2))

Mike, you may know how to make this a bit more elegant. I was doing this late at night and just wanted it to work...

It's a solution which requires paying attention to details and a bit of manual intervention, but it gets the job done.

My preference would be to display both relationships in the diagram, to highlight the complexity of the relationship. So I would use two lines:

=Relationship(FileRoot(),%INDI%,TEXT,1)
and =Relationship(FileRoot(),%INDI%,TEXT,2)

This makes it easy to add a more lines if more relationships are found.

The following should also work and is a little neater:
=CombineText( , Relationship(FileRoot(),%INDI%,TEXT,2), , Relationship(FileRoot(),%INDI%,TEXT,1) )

It can be extended for the 3rd closest relationship:
=CombineText( , CombineText( , Relationship(FileRoot(),%INDI%,TEXT,3), , Relationship(FileRoot(),%INDI%,TEXT,2) ), , Relationship(FileRoot(),%INDI%,TEXT,1) )

Hi Lorna,

I create 2 diagrams for this case, each displaying the appropriate relationships.

It is important to me to be very clear because I am using these (together with other people) for DNA research.

The distance of relationships is important.

But, of course, everybody has their own needs and that's what's great about FH. You can do just about anything, if you bang your head against the wall long enough.
