Hi,I am on Family Historian Version 6.2.7. I have recently made a Copy of my Original Project and marked it "COPY".I have now amended the COPY to flag up private and living persons so that when I send the Gedcom to an intended website those persons are hidden.I decided to rename the COPY -"COPY annotated to exclude private and living persons".When I try to open the COPY (as amended) I get a message -"Unable to open File.......... File Path is invalid".The Original Project includes media.I considered deleting the COPY (as amended) but there is a Warning that I may loose data in another project (Query - Is this the Original Project?)Can a member please suggest how I can resolve the problem please.

Hello Grahame, I have moved this topic from the General forum (which is for general non-FH discussions) to the General Usage forum which is about using FH.

Did you change just the name of the project folder? or just the name of the Gedcom file? When you rename a project you need to rename the entire folder structure. The way to do this is via the Project Window. Select the project from the list, then click More Tasks and choose Rename Project.

Edit: The above assumes that you originally made a copy of the entire project. However if you made a copy of just the Gedcom file this would explain the warning about losing media, as the copy Gedcom may be sharing the same media files. Post here again with further details if necessary.

Hi Lorna,I made a Copy of the entire Project File.I then made the amendments in the COPY file (ie the flagging up of private and living persons).I then selected the Copy file from the list clicked on More Tasks and chose the Rename Project (to include "COPY- annotated to exclude private and living persons".At no time did I do anything with the Gedcom File.I carried out the above procedure and it does not resolve the issue.May be I just do not understand the workings of FH.

I wonder if the entire file path is now too long. Try renaming the copy to something slightly shorter (e.g. "COPY - privatised") to see if that works.

Hi Lorna,I have tried that, but regrettably it does not work. The original long wording is shown in the Projects and when opening the " Unable to Open..........invalid path" is shown. If I decide to delete the COPY (as amended)will my Original Project remain intact including the Media? The Original Project is somewhat extensive.I would then make another copy and privatise that.

Sorry for butting in, but that Project name is definitely too long, and as it is used in the associated Windows folder name twice, has probably exceeded the 256 character filepath limit.
i.e.
C:\Users\<username>\Documents\Family Historian Projects\COPY annotated to exclude private and living persons\COPY annotated to exclude private and living persons.fh_data\COPY annotated to exclude private and living persons.ged

To retrieve the situation, first open the Family Historian Projects folder in Windows File Explorer.
There you will find a folder named COPY annotated to exclude private and living persons
Within that there is a folder named COPY annotated to exclude private and living persons.fh_data
And also the project file named COPY annotated to exclude private and living persons.fh_proj
Within that will be the GEDCOM file COPY annotated to exclude private and living persons.ged
Rename all four back to just COPY by removing annotated to exclude private and living persons and all will be well.
