clean install of Windows 10

Oh dear, I am in trouble again! Back in 2016 I had major computer problems and even bought a new PC and sought a lot of help from here in setting up FH again. I did, in fact, decide to buy a download for version 6 and all has been wonderful until now. I have saved all the upgrades and back-up copies all my files and folders.

Some months ago I (and many others) had huge problems with Microsoft's upgrade to Windows10 v1709 but managed to keep everything. Now, however, due to the catastrophic damage caused by Microsoft's latest attempt to upgrade to Windows 10 v 1803, I have had to have a clean install of my hard drive. (That is all another issue I won't go into here).

The result is that I am busy re-installing everything as I have no programmes. I have a separate hard drive with my files and folders which is brilliant but what I hadn't anticipated was that my download folder wasn't kept and I don't know how to restore Family Historian on to my new drive. Have I got to buy another completely new download or disc? Despite being happy that I know my gedcoms and photos are safe I am in despair! I do actually have it on my ancient laptop but wouldn't know how to transfer it on to my desktop. Is that even possible? Any help is always appreciated.

Further to all the above, I was delighted to find I did save the original download of version 6 to a USB key BUT I don't know where I made a note of the product key - is there any hope for me?

If you purchased a download licence, raise a ticket with Calico Pie here: http://support.calico-pie.com/ and they will normally reply fairly quickly with your licence details and a download link.

Remember to use the email address you purchased with.

Yes, see how_to:family_historian_licence_problems|> Family Historian Licence Problems.
Do please make an Installation Archive as advised there, alongside your Project Backups.

Did you use the Backup and Restore FH Settings Plugin to preserve all your customisation settings?

Thanks, I will investigate the details you sent. I am not sure if I know how to use a plug-in but I will endeavour to understand it and I will make an Installation Archive once I am up and running again.

Thanks, too, Jane, I have opened a support ticket.

Up and running once more. Phew! Thanks again for prompt help and what brilliant customer service from Calico Pie! I won't lose the key in the future but it is good to know you can register it with them.

The Installation Archive is very sound advice. I record the key / validation code, etc., for every piece of software that provides it, in a folder in my "Documents" folder and have this included in all my backup routines.

A good reminder, have just checked my back-ups. That they are current and useable.
