Hi, I'm completely new to this software, so please excuse if this is a dumb question ....
I'm adding people into my tree, and resourcing as I go. I also add the citation media (BC, MC, etc.), but although I've added several fact-based media, when I look at the 'all event/fact media' filter, apart from one marriage cert, the other certs that I've added are not there - and in fact only show up in the 'all media' list. I'm obviously doing something wrong, but can't see what? Can anyone help, since this is pretty fundamental...?

I have moved this to the FH General Usage folder, which is more appropriate.

It all depends on exactly where you are adding your Media, which can be attached to several different types of data items.
See how_to:v4:adding_multimedia|> Adding Photographs and Other Multimedia.
The usual convention is to add photos to the Individual/Family record Media tab, but add Source Documents to the Source record Media tab associated with Citations, see glossary:sources|> Source Records. Adding Media directly to Facts is relatively rare, see how_to:v4:adding_multimedia_to_a_fact|> Adding Multimedia to a Fact. So try the other filters for All Individual Media, All Family Media, All Source Media.

As a newcomer I advise you study how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers and all its links to other [kb]|[/kb] pages, and in the context of this question especially Sources Methods 1 & 2 and Ancestral Sources.

Apologies for placing in the incorrect folder - to be honest, I didn't know which folder it was going in .

However, my question was to do with the fact that since I have attached the media to the citation (I'm pretty much a 'lumper'), which is based on a 'fact', I would expect it to therefore appear in one of the filters other than 'all media'. I created the Fact, then created/added a resource, then pressed the 'show media' image against the resource, which gave me the Citation Media choice, and added the cert there. They appear now to be 'orphaned' unless you show 'all media'. The knowledge base articles you pointed me at don't seem to cover that, since the examples are based on creating a resource for each cert (splitters)...?

Once again, I apologise if I'm being a bit thick, but I thought I was being entirely logical...

...There is a source media filter, but that would only show media against the actual resource, which in a lumper's world, would only be in the case of a photo of a church, or somesuch. There is no filter in the drop-down for the citation media...

You have identified an omission in the FH Media List filters.
Until FH V6.1.4 the support for Citation Media was hidden on the All tab, but then the Show Media button was enhanced to allow Citation Media to be easily managed. However, the Media List filters appear to have been overlooked.
So please report that oversight to Calico Pie using how_to:about#problem_reporting|> Problem Reporting.

Nevertheless, the advice about Method 1 and Method 2 suggest that despite your preference for Method 2 'lumpers' mode, adding Media to Source Citations is better suited to Method 1 'splitters' mode.
For example, with your Birth Certificate cases don't you add any Facts (resources) for the parents, such as Residence or Occupation?
If so, that must mean you are duplicating the Citation Media.

Thanks for the response - it was extremely helpful - I will report as you say and see what happens.

I haven't had a problem with duplicated citation media...I only ever link the media to the database, then either copy & paste the citation, or use the witness feature (which is excellent). For instance, I put my own birth in as a fact, add the resource as 'Birth Certificate', and add the cert to the citation media. Then I copy the citation, go to my father and add residence and occupation facts and paste the citation to them. I don't really trust myself to use the automatic source citation feature yet. I use the witness feature for marriage and death certs (although the latter brings me to another point...).

Perhaps this needs to be a separate question, but I can't see a way to edit a witness role once it's created? I made a mistake on adding a new one ("Present at the death"), and can see no way of either editing or deleting it...?

OK, so you confirm that you are creating copies of Citations that duplicate the Citation Media links.
That could be avoided by using Method 1 Source Citations, but I accept that if that is the only duplication, then it isn't too bad.

Did you know that you can use ancestralsources:index|> Ancestral Sources to semi-automate that whole process of adding Birth, Residence & Occupation facts each with a Citation and Media using Method 2?
Similar capabilities are offered for Census, Baptism, Marriage, Death & Burial facts.
