Question about Source numbering when splitting/ merging projects

Post by jouhar » 26 Apr 2018 09:35

My son-in-law has bought FH v6.2.6 and I have given him a copy of my Project so that he can add to the Project by adding his family history . He will create new sub-folders under Media to store and link pictures. I may do some more work on my side of the family tree and in due course we can either merge the two projects or maybe split his project (with him as root person) and add it to mine.... all good (I think) .... BUT..

...What happens if he adds some sources and I add some sources (we both have AS on our laptops)... each new source is given a sequential number isn't it.., so we will both have used the same numbers ? Will the Merge (when we eventually do it) account for this situation ?

Thanks very much for any help.

Yes, the Merge will cope with that by allocating new Record Id numbers where necessary.
That situation applies not just to Source records, but all record types.
Any Individual, Family, Note, Source, Repository, Media, Place, etc, records that either of you add to the current Project will use the same Record Id numbers, but they are simply an internal numbering system to ensure every record has a unique identity, and for all practical purposes you can ignore them. See glossary:record_types_and_record_id|> Record Types and Record Id.

It would be feasible to share the same Project in cloud storage (such as OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive), and keep changes that either of you make synchronised. BUT you do have to ensure that only one of you is editing the Project at any one time. It is probably not worthwhile if you only intend to Merge very occasionally.

Thank you very much for your comprehensive reply.

I will have a look at the Knowledge Base as well.
I take your point about the cloud storage.... maybe we will consider that later - I don't expect that we will merge very often to start with, while he is working on his side.

Thanks again !
