Moving from PC to Pc

Post by janefrances » 16 Mar 2018 20:12

I'm in the middle of working from the above Back up and Restore Family Historian Settings- Advice and don't understand step 5 ie.
On the new PC in FH ensure the File>Project Window> Location mine is as below. I have opened the sample project but is this right? I'm afraid I don't really understand the rest of Step 5 and could do with some advice  Many thanks.

Jane,

I think you are referring to this step in the Help & Advise for the plugin.
5. On the new PC in ƒh ensure the File > Project Window > Location: and the Tools > Preferences > Startup > Default Startup File and Tools > Preferences > Backup > Default Backup Folder are set correctly as these are NOT included in the Backup Data
What this means is that using the plugin does not set the project location, default startup file, and default backup folder on the new PC, you must ensure that the values there are correct for your computer.

First go to File > Project Window and look at the Location: field under the list of projects and ensure it is correct. If not you can click on the current location and change it.

Then go to Tools > Preferences > Startup > Default Startup File and ensure the file name is correct. If not you can use the Select button to change it.

And lastly, go to Tools > Preferences > Backup > Default Backup Folder and ensure the file name is correct. If not you can use the Select button to change it.

Ask if you still have questions.

Jane, Bill's advice is correct as far as it goes.

In Step 4) where did you copy the ...\Family Historian Projects\ folder to?

Wherever that was it was NOT My Documents\Family Historian Projects\.
If it was then all your Projects would be listed there in the Project Window.

Most often, users will stick to similar setting values on the two PC.
So how are those three Step 5) setting values configured on your old PC?

Usually you should compare equivalent settings & folders on old PC versus new PC and make them the same.

I was following the Moving from PC to PC advice and have now switched to the Standard Migration Steps. On step 4, my entire Family Historian Projects are saved onto a USB pen, if I copy them over to the new PC would I copy these files into my documents? as this is where they are stored on the old PC. I don't want to rush this stage as I don't want to muck it up! Many thanks.

Yes, like most users, you need to replicate on the new PC exactly what you had on the old PC.
Except that Windows usernames and disk drive letters may be different in some of the folder paths.

I've copied the files over and FH seems to picked my project up ok, the location is correct, as the default Start up file, however I'm at a loss finding the Default backup folder located in FH. Many thanks.

I've just looked at my old PC and in Preferences>Backup in the Default Back up Folder it is just C:\Users\Jane\Documents\Family Historian Projects. I don't seem to have a Backup folder as mentioned in Step 5 :?

Yes, so C:\Users\Jane\Documents\Family Historian Projects is both your Backup folder and your Projects folder.
I can see from your earlier Back up and Restore (15770) posting, that is where the Backup and Restore FH Settings Plugin is saving its Backup, inside the C:\Users\Jane\Documents\Family Historian Projects\Family Historian folder.
Note that although existing in C:\Users\Jane\Documents\Family Historian Projects, that Family Historian folder is NOT listed in the File > Project Window as unsurprisingly it does not meet the criteria for a Project.

It seems that at Step 3) you did not use a …\Documents\Family Historian Projects\Backup subfolder as advised.
But no matter, it will work the way it is now with C:\Users\Jane\Documents\Family Historian Projects as the Backup folder.

As a matter of interest where do you save the FH Project Backups when prompted as FH closes or via the File > Backup/Restore commands?

Thanks Mike, how do go about creating a sub folder for my back ups in Family Historian? I still have the old PC so changes can still be made before transferring from one to the other.

It somewhat depends on your plans.
Are you intending to keep running FH on both old PC and new PC?
Do you have FH Backups on old PC that you want to migrate to new PC?

I suspect the answer is 'No' to both those, in which case don't change anything just yet.
Complete the migration steps, and then we can consider how to reorganise backups.

It will be instructive to complete the migration steps.
If you decide to reconfigure the Backup folder on both PC, you will better understand process should you wish to repeat the migration from scratch with revised Backup folder configuration.
To define a new Backup folder, in Tools > Preferences > Backup > Default Backup Folder use the <<Select option and if necessary use the Make New Folder option.

Many thanks Mike for your help, I've now completed the migration steps and have FH on the other laptop. I haven't changed anything just yet but with your help I would now like to reorganise those backups. :)

I assume you have checked that any customised Diagrams, Reports, Queries, Plugins, etc, are as they should be on the new PC, the same as they were on the old PC?

It would help if you answered the questions I set in my last posting.
Do you actually have any saved Backups to reorganise?
Or just need to set Tools > Preferences > Backup > Default Backup Folder on the new PC, which you do as I described earlier.
Thereafter, all future FH Backups should be directed at that folder.

Yes, I've checked the Family Historian Project files, Custom Facts and Plugins and all seem ok and I don't intend to run FH on both laptops, one is enough for me!

I didn't have any saved back ups to organise so I've now created a new folder called Backup in the Preferences>backup (see screenshot) I think that this is correct?

I'm not to sure if Kinsfolk should be in the Project window though as this was on the old PC too. I appreciate all your help, Mike, you've been great. :D

That all looks good.
I suspect the Kinsfolk Project came with the fhugdownloads:contents:kinsfolk_facts_sources|> Fact Set ~ Kinsfolk Facts & Sources and can be deleted if no longer needed.
