Family Historian User Guide

Post by CloudedGenie » 01 Mar 2018 12:23

I am a fairly recent convert to Family Historian.

When I started my genealogy research back in 2008, I used the then brand-new online Geni tree, but after discovering that other members could turn my beautifully researched tree into the topiary from "The Shining", I abandoned it and started using Legacy. I then moved on to TMG to get more flexibility, but work pressures got in the way after 2010 and my genealogy research went on the back-burner until last year. I discovered that TMG was no longer supported, and wanted to do a "re-do" and ensure proper sourcing, especially with all the new online information available.

Looking at the alternatives, I upgraded my Legacy licence and also obtained a licence for RootsMagic (it was just starting to become available back when I was using TMG) and used these two in parallel. The Legacy user interface quickly irritated me with its inability to use my high resolution screen to its full capacity, so I settled on RootsMagic, and got very comfortable with how it works. The integration with FamilySearch, MyHeritage and Ancestry from one application is pretty convenient, and the source writing templates can be configured to work well (It is however very US-focused).

However, I am publishing my tree to TNG website for my family to access, and I was having to do a lot of cleanup after every export/import into my online database. A number of people suggested I use Family Historian 6 with the export plugin, so I decided to buy another license (!) and use that in parallel with RootsMagic for a while. The learning curve for Family Historian is certainly steeper -- not more than TMG used to be years ago, I'm slower these days ;)

I have made the final decision to stick with Family Historian 6 as my main database. The database from my last import still needs a lot of cleanup. I have some duplicate facts and the sources/citations are certainly a bit wonky (a technical term), but I guess I will just have to go through them one by one.

The Knowledge Base articles and these forums have been extremely helpful. However, a lot of the time that I have for doing this, is while traveling (i.e. without internet access). I have not been able to locate an electronic version of the "Getting the most from Family Historian 6" handbook for sale, so finally ordered a print version -- I have not bought a print version book in years. It arrived a few days ago, and it is extremely helpful (I probably should have bought it a long time ago). However... it is HUMONGOUS! I use a Surface Pro 4, and the book is bigger and fatter than my laptop  It doesn't fit in my dainty laptop bag...

Are there any electronic guides available for ignoramuses like? Something that I can access while on a 12-14 hour flight without internet access? I do not want an illegal download of a guide, I want to buy it, if it is not free.

Any suggesstions?

Prior to Version 6 the guide was included in PDF format and you can download the V5 version. Probably 90% is very similar so the basic principles are the same.

You can find various versions of the V5 guide here:

Thank you so much!

I don't know how many times I've read something in the book and gone "really, that's all you have to do?..." after I figured out a convoluted 14-click method to achieve the same thing

I have to apologise to you Christelle.
When newcomers first post as you did in Alternate Names (4929) we usually advise studying how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers and its links to other [kb]|[/kb] pages, amongst which you would have found the free PDF Book: "Getting the Most From Family Historian 5" to download.
Studying the other topics in Key Features for Newcomers will probably still be worthwhile, but does need Internet access.
