Show page boundaries not working

Post by tbroo22 » 17 Feb 2018 22:20

After obtaining FH6 last year I learned most of the basic operations, including how to maneuver a large diagram (or part of a diagram) on to a small number of pages using Show Page Boundaries, then Scaling and Moving. These can then be taped together for display. But after a few months Show Page Boundaries suddenly began displaying the diagram on a ridiculously large number of tiny pages (typically 30-175), when it obviously didn't need that many. I just tried printing one of these "175 page" diagrams to a pdf (didn't want to waste that much paper) and it in fact occupied only 12 pages. I'm sure I could get it down to four pages with proper scaling and moving, but that is very hard to do when Show Page Boundaries isn't displaying correctly.

I've tried restoring the installation settings, and checked font size and other settings, and can't figure this out. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have you ever changed the paper size in File > Print Setup? Check that it is set to A4 (assuming that is the size of paper you normally use).
Also, remember you can quickly change the scale by right-clicking on one of the intersections of the page boundaries and dragging the mouse diagonally.

It seems to be associated with with which printer is chosen in File > Print Setup.
When my real printer is chosen, even though it has A4 paper, then the Diagram has many small pages.
Change File > Print Setup to use Family Historian PDF printer and all is OK, even if you switch back to real printer.

But that setting does not stick, and each new Diagram has to start again.

Have you recently updated to FH V6.2.6 ?

I wonder if that version has introduced this bug, as I have not noticed it before.

Thank you very much Mike. That worked perfectly. Yes, I have upgraded to V6.2.6 but that did not seem to affect this.

As installed Windows 10, does not have a default printer, and "intelligently" changes the default. I suspect this may be part of the problem.

I set mine to the Microsoft PDF printer ages ago and can't reproduce the problem with diagrams.

I have not had this problem with FH6.2.6 but am using it with Windows 7, so Jane's suggestion about Windows 10 may be right.

I have the latest Windows 10 Version 1709 and have my actual HP Photosmart printer set as Default.
That is confirmed in Start > Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners.

If I change that so either Family Historian PDF or Microsoft Print to PDF is the Default then FH Diagrams use correct page size.

But that means whenever I want a real printout I have to remember to change the printer, which is a pain.

I don't remember this being a problem before.

However, this morning I cannot make FH Diagrams go wrong with my actual HP Photosmart printer set as Default.
