Demo link for Family historian

Post by dbridge276 » 17 Jan 2018 11:14

Is anyone aware why the 30 day trial link for FH does not work for Australians?
http://www.family-historian.co.uk/downl ... -day-trial

I gave the link to a cousin of mine in Tasmania and they advised me the link does not work for them (error below):

The error they received was:
We have tried numerous times to download the family tree program.
It says insufficient permissions and errors, as trying to install it.

I have sent my relatives a cutdown copy of my FH project for their ancestry that includes photos and a separate GEDCOM file.

They have imported the GEDCOM into Family Tree Maker for the time being, but they can’t access the photos.

Could this just need installing as an administrator on their PC?

Any help would be appreciated.

I have moved this to the FH General Usage Forum that is better suited.

We have plenty of antipodean FH users, so I suspect your cousin may simply be unfamiliar with installing programs.

Refer them to how_to:reinstall_family_historian|> Family Historian Installation Advice and in particular how_to:family_historian_installation_problems|> Family Historian Installation Problems Introduction & Safe Mode.

Yes, they need to be running in an Administrator account on a Windows PC (but NOT Windows XP nor Apple Mac).

To be honest, the error messages you quote do not look like any error messages that I recognise.
They sound more like your cousin's paraphrasing of the problem rather than the explicit error messages.

Yes, FTM will not recognise the FH GEDCOM format for linked Media files and may mess up other details.
An alternative would be to use the Export Gedcom File Plugin and use the Brief Data with (FTM) Family Tree Maker export modes. Then your cousin should be able to import the resultant GEDCOM and Media into FTM.

Another possibility is that they are using Bit Defender, this has been causing problems for many users just recently.

Another one is that they are using Windows 7, which has been suffering after a Windows update Security patch which locked many users out of their own Documents and Program Data folders. A work around for both of these is to install when the computer is booted in safe mode after making sure they have updated Bit Defender.

See Cannot install v6.2.6 (15607) and Family Historian won't load (15590).

I found that the link to download a demo edition did not work. it informed me that my trial period had expired.
Also tried using a different email and password to no effect. there is a definite fault some where.
In the end I bought the full programme as it was what I wanted, but disappointed not to get a chance to try it out first.
I use Windows 10 and even tried without virus checker working.
I live in Scotland so there should be no problem as to country of use, ( or I would hope not).

Happened to me a while back, emailed Calico Pie and they sent me a temporary licence key very quickly.

This normally only happens if you have previously downloaded and installed the program. You only ever get one trial per computer, but as the previous poster said if you want a trial extension, you simply need to email support and they will normally send one fairly quickly.
