child count on family

typical situation, I have people who have multiple families
I need to put a child count subordinate to each of the family records as the standard sets out. NCHI in FAM_RECORD page 24. It allows it on the indi record page 30, but this will not cut the mustard when tehere are multiple marriages, in fact, NCHI is only useful for bachelors or spinsters when in the indi record.
the only commentary I find here is this
viewtopic.php?f=32&t=14284&p=72271&hili ... unt#p72271 and the children event does not help me here.(and in fact I don't believe it is at the family level in any case)
I cannot seem to find out how to get at the child count in a family record. it does not appear in the list of family events and attributes.
Which click am I missing? or is this an error I need to report?

Yes both
End of Line Marker (14284) and
Help needed to write an expression (15597) have a similar theme.
Whereas the
Individual record
NCHI is a
GEDCOM Attribute (Page 30), the
Family record
NCHI is NOT a
GEDCOM Attribute (Page 24) and thus has no subordinate
Date,
Place,
Address,
Note fields.
That explains why it does not appear on the
Add Fact list for a
Family record
Facts tab, as it is not a Fact.
Instead you must use the
All tab, and right-click the name to
Add Miscellaneous > Add Count of Children.

The Main Tab of an individual's property box gives the number of children in each marriage in the header of the list of children when the spouses are selected. Strangely the child list and number of children does not appear in the Family property box, perhaps for the reasons mentioned by Tatewise.
It is possible to add a custom field to the Main Tab of the Family property box with the data reference %FAM.NCHI%. This saves the effort of going via the All Tab.
However, as far as I know NCHI is not a calulated field so the numbers have to be added manually. This is where the inbuilt function ChildCount can be used in a simple plugin to update all these numbers, but of course you still have to run the plug-in from time to time to update them.

Ah, ok. I get it, seems like the long way around the barn, but that will work for me. Thank you so kindly, tatewise.

If you need to access that field often, then as David says, it can be customised into the Main tab of the Family Property Box to avoid negotiating the All tab right-click command.
But even better, the Family NCHI can be customised onto the Spouses tab of the Main tab of the Individual Property Box to avoid even having to switch to the Family record.

I would love that, I am not facile enough to do that, could you waltz me thru the steps? Thanks. I figured out how to do the other one.

- In the Choose Area dialogue select Area for shared details and click OK
- In the New Custom Item dialogue set the Custom Item Name to Child Count
- Tick Part 1 and set Label: to Child Count and Data Reference to FAM.NCHI
