Transfer gedcom from free trial to purchased v6.2 on another laptopp

Post by tishgibbons » 29 Dec 2017 20:29

Perhaps this question has been answered many times before but I'm a 'Family Historian' newbie so be patient... ;)

I used a free trial version of FH while on holidays to create a family tree for a special occasion. I used a small laptop that is only used when travelling. I've now purchased v6.2 and installed it on the laptop at home - it's a better machine, connects to the printer, etc. Unfortunately I cannot transfer the gedcom from the other laptop :( Can anything be done about this? I spent days inputting data and dread the thought of having to redo it all. I own both machines but only intend to use FH on one of them.

Was it a gedcom or a project that you created?

See this article how_to:move_settings|> Move Family Historian Settings and Projects.

Thanks Colin. The free trial has expired so neither the project nor the gedcom will open. I tried attaching the gedcom to an e-mail and sending it to myself to open on the laptop that has the paid for FH v6.2 but it will not open there either. The instructions on migration imply that you have access to FH on the old laptop - I don't.

Just use the Windows file browser to find your project / gedcom.

It will probably be located in My Documents/Family Historian Projects. There you should find the Family Historian Sample Project and your personal project named whatever you called it. Copy that entire folder to a usb stick and then put the stick in the other computer and copy the project to same location.

You are permitted to install the paid version on two computers and so you could install the paid version on your laptop and then have full access to the project on there too.

(EDIT: Colin's post arrived while I was typing this)

It's not essential to have access to FH on the old laptop. You should be able to transfer the Gedcom file, or the entire Project folder if you created a Project, to the new laptop. Email is one way of doing that, another would be to put the file/folder on a USB stick.

Where on the new laptop did you put the file?
What method did you use to try to open it? (Did you try to open it from within FH or did you double-click on the file?)
What error message, if any, did you get when you tried to open it?

If you can give us some more details we should be able to help sort it out. You won't have to enter all the data again.

If you bought the full version of FH 6, you can also use the same serial number to "Activate" the free trial version to full status (You can have FH on 2 devices) , which will also mean that plugins can be run.

Thanks All!!
I think I'm sorted - put the project on the usb and it opened on new laptop. Had some trouble opening it in FH - could only access the backup - but I've merged the two projects (I think!) and it seems to be working. I'll keep working on it - thanks for the help.
