Windows 10 update 18 Dec 2017

Post by Rohese » 18 Dec 2017 17:41

The new update from Windows has created a problem with FH as it couldn't save the project I was working on. It's created a temp file so I've not lost anything, but wondered if this problem had already been reported.

I have moved this to the FH General Usage Forum as it is not to do with the User Group that is for "Suggestions and requests for help on using this site".
See 'Media Insert Failed' Unable to copy file - error message (15534) that may be related.

Can you give any more details about which Windows Update that was.
Has it a KB number, or perhaps it was the Fall Creators Update Version 1709 ?

Does your FH installation use the default File > Project Window > Location: of Documents\Family Historian Projects?

Some Windows Updates are known to upset the access permissions on some folders.
Can you Rename the temp file to the correct project name .ged filename?
Can you save files to that same folder?
If not, then check the folder Properties and on Security tab check the Permissions for your user name.

It was Fall Creators Update but I didn't notice a number. I have FH 6. It has created a temp file which I cannot open as it has one of those blank page symbols against which when you click on says look for a file to open it and then when you do there isn't a suitable file. Very frustrating! Fortunately this particular tree I was merely checking so the original is still there but I would like to sort it out before I open a tree to add something to.
Will try your suggestions Mike. But why do they release a new update just before Christmas? Not a good time to try and do something techy!

In their defence, Microsoft starting rolling out the Fall Creators Update in October!. I installed the update at that time and, whilst I have had a few of the access permission issues Mike alluded to in previous updates (although not with FH), I had no problems with this update.

Rohese. Have a look at this post Autosave and saving (15367) and see if it helps, particularly the first reply by Tatewise.

It's a different problem but his solution might let you open the file to see what's in there, then get it working again with your project.

This is one of the routine 'major' updates to Windows 10 that will happen every Spring and Autumn (Fall).
They are rolled out over a period of months after initial release, which in this case was 11 October 2017.
If you check the Windows system details it will say it is Version 1709 (i.e. 2017 September).

Don't open the .tmp file just try to Rename it to <ProjectName>.ged where <ProjectName> is the name of your Project, and check the folder Properties for Security Permission as I suggested.

Many thanks for the various ideas. I tried renaming it which was fine and solved the problem except it isn't in the FH folder. I think the only thing to do is to transfer to a datastick and re-enter it from that. I tried another tree and that didn't create a temp folder so I hope the problem is now sorted. Fortunately I have the FH files on my laptop which is Windwos 7 so nothing is lost.
