Marriage data position

Post by Mike Attrill » 16 Nov 2017 18:11

When a tree is produced - the marriage data/date /place ; sometimes appears in male line.
Generally it appears in female line data.
Is there a field that controls position it appears in ? At entry of data, is there a correct procedure ?

See enclosed word doc of my tree .

Mike, it is usually better to Attach the JPG/PNG image directly to your posting rather than encapsulate it in a Word document, especially as some users may not have Word installed, whereas image viewers always exist.

Entry of data has no significant impact on the style with which Diagrams are displayed.
That style is governed primarily by the Diagram Options.

The style for Marriage Events is governed by the Text Scheme item for Marriage and General tab Spouse options.
By default the Marriage is displayed in the Female box for Ancestors (green background).
It is not displayed in Descendant boxes (straw background), only in Spouse boxes (beige background) of either sex.

However, the Options can be changed such that only Female boxes ever display Marriage details.
But that can be confusing for Female direct Descendants who have more than one Spouse as it may not be obvious which Marriage belongs with which Spouse.

Just to add to Mike's reply: in your diagram Mercy Emily Benford is the diagram Root (white box). The marriage details for the Root are displayed in the Spouse boxes, for the same reason as marriage details of descendants - to avoid ambiguity.

Mercy Emily Benford has a second (unknown) spouse, but if his details were known and the date of that marriage were known, it would be unclear which date referred to which marriage if they were both in Mercy's box.

If an Ancestor had more than one marriage, the details of the marriage to the other (non-ancestral) spouse are shown in the spouse box, of either sex.

Many thanks for replies.
Yes I see that marriage data ; is generally in female line.
Reviewing my tree - the times marriage data appears in male line - yes, there are possibilities of a earlier / later marriage to : AN OTHER.
