V6.2.5 download problem

Post by skeptik4321 » 07 Nov 2017 08:39

I have been using FH version 6 or 6.1 or 2, not sure because I now have no access. I use windows 10 and I have a newish HP computer. I tried to download V6.2.5 and it told me to abort and gave me error message 183. I did this at the weekend but now I find I cannot access FH at all. Can anyone help on this please? I am going out now for a few hours so will not immediately reply if anyone has any brilliant ideas!
Many thanks
Val

Hi Val, sorry about that problem.

With these problems it is important to give as many details as possible, so we can help as quickly as possible.

Exactly how did you perform the V6.2.5 download and installation?

Try downloading from http://www.family-historian.co.uk/downl ... ee-upgrade and then follow the advice in the Introduction of how_to:family_historian_installation_problems|> Family Historian Installation Problems.

If you still get the error message, then please take a screenshot, and post as an Attachment here as advised in info:forums#posting_topics|> Posting Topics.

A Google Search suggests Error 183 may be associated with the Malwarebyes Anti-virus utility or various corruptions, but the error message should make that clearer.

BTW:
A little housekeeping, nothing to do with the error, but your Profile on the right of your posting still says Family Historian: V5.
Click your username skeptik4321 top right of this web page and choose User Control Panel.
Then on its Profile tab, select your Family Historian: V6.2, and scroll down to click Submit.

Thank you tatewise for your quick response. Here are my details: I use Windows 10 and HP Pavilion computer.
I bought V6 boxed to replace my V2 and many upgrades. I have no downloads on my computer for any V6 upgrades so I think I must just have V6.
V6.2.5 was downloaded from an invitation on my FH programme when I opened it at the weekend. I followed the instructions to download and gave permission. Before installation a pop-up told me I did not have a recognised app from the store. I said install anyway and the wizard stopped halfway through with the error message 183. I checked through all the advice you gave me, and gave myself administrator status and tried again but the same thing happened. I am attaching the error message I received.
Sorry about not changing my profile, I thought I had, but I did not scroll down and see the submit button
Val

Val,

1. Don't choose to run the installation process as part of the download process when you are presented with the option in Windows Explorer; choose the Save option instead.
2. Locate the saved file in your Download Folder.
3. Right Click on the downloaded file and choose 'Run as Administrator' and, hopefully, the installation should then complete.

It is quite common that the FH auto-update install wizard does not succeed.
That is why I suggest downloading directly from http://www.family-historian.co.uk/downl ... ee-upgrade.
You should do that from an Administrator privileged account.
I suggest that you Save that upgrade_fh6_to_6.2.5_dl.exe file to your Desktop or Download folder where easily located.
Do NOT try and run it directly from the web page.

It is a good idea to temporarily pause your anti-virus software package and disconnect from Internet.
That is especially true for Malwarebytes and McAfee but others have been implicated that produce code 183 message.
Ensure that FH itself is NOT running.
Right-click that upgrade_fh6_to_6.2.5_dl.exe file and choose Run as administrator as advised in how_to:family_historian_installation_problems|> Family Historian Installation Problems.

If that does not succeed, then follow the advice about using Windows Safe Mode.

If that still fails, then report back and we can try some more forceful methods, such as uninstalling FH first.

Good morning Mike and Mervyn and thank you so much for helping me. I went right through all your suggestions, but nothing worked until I got to the bottom of the list and went into safe mode, which did the trick and now it is all sorted and I am up to date!

I am glad that worked Val.

The beauty of Safe Mode is that it inhibits all extraneous processes such as anti-virus software, backup routines, cloud storage clients, etc, and also inhibits the Internet connection. So the PC is running in isolation with just the bare Windows toolset, and if installation then fails there really is a major problem.

I hope you continue to enjoy the features of FH, but if you need any further advice then please post in a new thread.
