driver update has lost my fh project

Post by barbaramac » 01 Nov 2017 03:50

My security (Norton) said the disk need optimization, nothing was open so I click it to optimize the disk. When finished I opened to use Family Historian the icon is still on desktop but is empty, (it does have the sample project there), I am using windows 10, which I really dislike and not up to scratch with it, I have tried for hours to find anything relating to fh on the computer as I save it every time I enter anything, I also save it to a external portable storage (2TB) I have not been game to try to put it into the project , would it be "A new Project"? I did find "Family Historian" which said: Unable to open file C:\Users B \Documents\Family Historian (1) Projects\Nagle-........-R......R....-A... (2)Nagle-M ....-R...-R..... A........
(2) ged.Access Denied

The other: Location is not available. FH data is not accessable: ACCESS DENIED
At on stage I thought I may have a virus after having the ransomeware last December on my previous computer, but according to Norton all okay.
Any ideas how I go about this? :?:

Hi Barbara,
I am surprised Norton says optimization is needed, as that is just another name for defragmentation, and Windows 10 (8 & 7) does that automatically in the background. Norton simply invokes the Windows 10 functions, so in future don't accept that offer. Did you let it run to completion before shutting down your PC?

When you say the FH icon is empty, I presume you mean the icon opens FH OK, but the only Project listed in File > Project Window is the Family Historian Sample Project.
That is the default scenario following installation of FH with the default Project Location: of C:\Users\ B \Documents\Family Historian Projects.

When you originally set up FH did you change the Location: shown in the File > Project Window to somewhere else?
Perhaps another disk drive, or maybe the Dropbox, or OneDrive, or Google Drive folder?

You mention C:\Users\ B \Documents\Family Historian (1) Projects\... but I don't understand where the (1) comes from. Did you enter that as a Location?

When you say "The other Location is not available" what Location is that?

For us to help, could you be more explicit about the commands you are using or post screenshots.
e.g.
How are you trying different Locations?
How are you searching the PC for FH files?
How do you save to external portable storage?
