Copying Source Records from Project to Project

Post by Gerard1 » 06 Oct 2017 07:09

Can I copy a Source List of about 85 items from one Project to another. The new Project maybe merged into the old one at some stage but prefer to keep it separate at the moment. I do not want to enter 85 Source items to the new Project.

I have started a new thread for this as it needs a completely different technique.

First of all, seriously consider if you need another Project at all, because merging two Projects is non-trivial.
For example, if it is for a family branch that you are not yet certain is related to your main family tree, then just create a separate tree in your main Project, where you can have as many disjoint trees called Pools as you wish. Then later on, you can just make the relationship linkage between any two sub-trees.

If you really need to copy Source records, then presumably you will want to copy any Media attached to those Sources, and any Repository records if you use them.
So follow the methods given in how_to:exporting_gedcom_with_multimedia|> Exporting a Family Tree with/without Media.
But do NOT select any Individual Records and review the Exclude tick options carefully.
You may want to tick Note records, Submitter records, Submission records, and Place records to exclude them, but do NOT tick Unconnected Records otherwise you will end up with nothing at all.

Create a New Project from the exported GEDCOM as per [kb]|[/kb] advice above, but do NOT use that Project.
Instead, use File > Project Window > More Tasks > Copy Project to create your other working Project.
Then if you need another temporary Project later on, you can just copy the Sources only Project again.

If any of this is not clear, then please ask again.
