Seeing the Named Lists?

Post by E Wilcock » 06 Sep 2017 08:47

Can anyone tell me please the method when using a lap top?

I added to a named list all the people I needed to look up in some archive records. On my Windows 10 lap top in the archive, I had much difficulty.
I remembered it was hidden to one side of the records list but it took a frustrating time to find the correct handle to pull to reveal it. And I still dont know quite what I did.
And I had some difficult getting to or returning to the focus window while having the named list also visible. Because I was working down the list. But needed the focus window too, as intending to look also for the family circle of the people whose names were there.

On my desktop computer Windows 7 and large screen - it doesnt seem to be a problem. if I go to View, Named lists, The list of all people comes up with the named lists in a panel to the right and below it the list of names from the list that is highlighted above.

As a PS - Apologies as I remember having this problem as a new user in an archive, but a search for Named List didnt find that thread.

Is Named lists window? (14665) what you're looking for?

I found it by clicking on your user name and then 'Search Users Posts' for "Named Lists". If you're having problems finding your own posts in future, that would be worth trying.

The "correct handle to pull" is View > Named Lists and choose the list of interest.

That will open the Records Window with the chosen Named List displayed on the right as you describe.

Alternatively, open the Records Window and click the Named Lists Pane button, which is penultimate icon on the toolbar.

Then select any person in the list and click the Display in Focus Window button, which is the Focus magnifying glass icon 3rd from left in toolbar.

To return to the Named List, open the Records Window by clicking its icon in the navigation bar down the lefthand side.

Unfortunately, the Named Lists Pane cannot be displayed alongside the Focus Window.

The focus window and the records/named list window can be shown side-by-side (but not synchronized) by using the Windows>Tile.. menu option. The property box if open will also show. The toolbar buttons still work as expected and it is necessary to use the Focus button to align the focus window to the individual selected in the records window.

I have not tried this on a laptop but I suspect the smaller screen area will make it not so useful.

Excellent David, I had overlooked that possibility.
Using Window > Tile Horizontally works quite well as shown below.
You may need to rearrange the size and position of the windows.

First I felt very ashamed of not finding my post because Mike had indeed explained that recently. I dont think clearly when I get stuck over the computer in the archive - especially if I am struggling with the records themselves.

And then I read on through the thread and saw the brilliant view - That is lovely and such inventiveness. Thank you all.

I am going to be doing quite a lot of this searchjng for entries in the records over the coming winter and it is going to make my life a lot easier.

Evelyn, just beware that unfortunately FH does not remember that arrangement of windows when it is closed.
The Window > Tile Horizontally command must be used and the windows repositioned every time FH is opened.
