Splitting Family Tree & Excluding Spouse's Media & Place Records

Post by BobWard » 01 Sep 2017 21:36

This is a question that relates to this previous thread.
viewtopic.php?f=32&t=13549 (Create Separate FH Project File For Spouse's Family)

However, I am starting a new topic to preclude getting lost in all the responses to the previous thread.

I have successfully split my wife's family off from mine by using Mike's Plug-In " All Pool Relatives Except Partner Ancestors". I created a Named List from the results of running that Plug-In.

I then followed Mike's instructions: Export > GEDCOM File and Select with Add using Query, choose Named List Members and selected the Named List I created from running the Plug-In.

I then created a new Project file by importing that new GEDCOM file. The new Project was created successfully.

However, the problem that I notice is that the new Project file includes all the Source records, all the Media records, and all the Place records from the original FH Project file that I did the split from. I was assuming that the new Project file for my wife's side of the family would have only copied the Source, Media, and Place records that applied to her side of the family, and not brought over all the same records for my side of the family.

Is there any way to suppress the records from my side of the family so they do not get included in my wife's new family tree?

Bob,

On the opening page of the export dialog make sure you have selected the Exclude option - Unconnected Records. Then only media, places etc that are associated with the people being exported will be included.

Yes, that Unconnected Records option should be ticked by default for that very reason, so I guess Bob that you unticked it?

Rick,

Many thanks - that was it.

Mike, yes, I did untick that box. I did that under the assumption that there might be some unconnected records on my wife's side of the family that I would want to catch. However, I did not realize that it would bring in all the unconnected records on my side as well, i.e., I thought it would restrict the unconnected records to only the GEDCOM file for my wife's family. Obviously, a bad assumption on my part. I now understand how it works.

Bob, you need to ask yourself how FH would know which Unconnected Records were NOT connected to your wife's side as opposed to those NOT connected to your side? If they are NOT connected it has nothing to go on.

OR were you drawing the distinction between Unconnected Records that were unconnected in the original GEDCOM prior to Selecting Individuals, and those that became Unconnected Records due the excluded Individuals?
