Re: "Ancestors by Generation" - NOT in narrative form?

Colin,

I understand the frustration, but also wonder how feasible it is to include everybody's preferences out of the box.

Personally, I loathe narrative reports -- they're stilted and repetitive; I'd rather write my own notes in good English, for inclusion with an outline/summary report (rather than go to the effort of customising sentences). So I'd be very happy to see no narrative reports out of the box at all.

But others only want narrative reports and find outline reports confusing, which is why I suspect it's impossible to please all the people all the time, except with extensive customisation options which then run up against the problem "if you don't already know what's possible and how to do it, you won't know what's possible or how to do it."

You could add connecting lines on that chart which might address your point about connecting individuals to their relatives. However, I was trying to address Craig's need for a report like the one shown at viewtopic.php?f=32&t=15245#p80437 which seems also (to me) to lack the items you've suggested.

The Descendant Outline Report shown by Helen has inhibited the Sp. prefix for spouses as well as the Connecting Lines.
There are also Numbering options to include say the Generation Level and also options to list any combination of facts.
As Helen says, it seems to mimic the report style suggested by Craig and maybe answers the original ctb request.

If the Sp. prefix for spouses and Generation Level numbers were added, then together with the Marriage events, it probably makes more sense to the uninitiated.
Those are simple Report Option settings that need no extensive customisation.
Also, in a Book or Website/DVD, there would be Diagrams to give a clearer picture of the family relationships.

There is also the Family Group Sheet that has lists of facts like the ISR, albeit for only two generations.

I have started the thread Published Report styles for discussion (15254) and is the best place to take this forward.

BTW: Craig, the fhugdownloads:contents:utility_the_complete_genealogy_reporter|> Utility ~ The Complete Genealogy Reporter (TCGR) lists the product you mentioned, and it appears to import FH Gedcom well, but the illustrated reports focus on narrative style.
Are there 'out-of-the-box' options to produce the list style you posted, and how does it indicated generation relationships?

Yes, Mike, everything is out of the box with no special configurations :-)

I posted this recently on another post, might be relevant here too:

I have found to add flexibility to the individual report, instead I use the narrative report and sentences so that it looks like a punchy fact by fact individual report, see:
