Error on marriages

Post by Hardyperennial » 21 Aug 2017 11:39

First, please excuse any stupidities in terminology in this post but this is my first visit to FHUG. I usually keep my problems for Jane to help with at the late lamented WDYTYA Live.....

Occasionally I add an erroneous second marriage to an individual. Normally when I discover this I delete any children attached to the wrong spouse and finally the spouse. This leaves the original marriage together with any children in place and the second erroneous marriage disappears.

However in two instances when I have done this recently a "phantom entry" for the second marriage remains. Example:

Marriage 1 - Henry Morgan married Alice Hill and they have four children.
Marriage 2 - Henry Morgan married Kate Jones and they have two children.
I discover that the second marriage is incorrect. I delete the two children and then Kate Jones.
But Harry Morgan still has two entries - one with Alice Hill and four children and the second with the usual box alongside "Add Wife/Partner". I wish to delete the second Harry Morgan entry but I am concerned that if I do so I will also delete the correct one.

Has anyone else encountered this problem and if so how did they resolve it?

Thank you so much for any help you can give.

What is happening is that you are deleting the records for the individuals, but you are not deleting the associated family record.

If you go to the Records Window (View > Record Lists > Families) you wil see a list of the family records in your data. You need to find the family record for Henry Morgan and an unnamed individual, and delete that family record. Note, you should see that the family record for Henry Morgan and Alice is completely separate from the one you are going to delete.

Welcome to the FHUG.

What I suspect has happened, despite deleting the children and wife, is that the 2nd Family record still exists linked to Henry Morgan.

In the Focus Window try clicking on the blue bar below Henry Morgan and his missing wife.
That will show the rogue Family record in the Property Box and its All tab will give full details.
Check that only the Husband link exists and no other relevant information.
Make a note of the Record Id.

Then in the Records Window on the Families tab locate that Record Id and delete the Family record by selecting it and pressing the Delete key or use Edit > Delete.

If the Families tab is not shown then follow the advice of how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers in 1st paragraph under Records & Fields & Multimedia.

In future to delete redundant relatives use how_to:removing_unwanted_relations|> Removing Unwanted Relations.

Thank you both so much. Phantom entries disappeared in a puff of smoke (well sweat actually as I am always nervous when deleting entries).

Cheers!
