* Focus window items

I recently upgraded from V.5 to V.6.
It seems that the focus window items displayed in an individuals window have changed. It used to show birth/bap and died/burial etc. Now it seems to pluck two items at random, in one example displaying "Born " & the first few words from Notes, but not the Burial. In another displays Born and a blank died although a burial is entered in the properties box. For the life of me I can't find a way to modify this aspect of the display which I am sure I have done in the past. How can I set what items and how many are displayed for a person in the focus window?

Hi Simon,
The Focus Window facts are governed entirely by the Property Box facts, and cannot be customised.
If a Birth or Death fact has a Date or Place recorded then they are shown in Focus Window.
Otherwise, any Baptism, Christening, Burial, or Cremated details of Date or Place are shown instead.

This was revised in V6 in response to user requests that Birth and Death details are often not known prior to 1837 in UK, and so Baptism and Burial details are required instead.

I don't understand how a blank Death is shown if a Burial with Date or Place exists.

If my explanation above appears not to apply, then please post a screenshot of the Focus Window and Property Box to illustrate the problem.

As you can see fhug1.jpg has a burial and no death but the focus windows shows died and no burial.
fhug2.jpg shows the note in the focus window and not the burial.

That does look very strange Simon, especially as it shows bur. 1814 and bur. 1818 in the boxes at the top.
Just double check you have latest Version 6.2.5 by using Help > About Family Historian.

Could you post a fully expanded All tab screenshot of the Death events to show all sub-fields.

I have tried to recreate your scenario but cannot get a blank Died: entry in the Focus Window.

What does it show on the other tabs of the Focus Window?

Wouldn't a "Blank" (ie no details) death fact cause those symptoms

No! A blank Death event does not cause that. I've tried many variations of that with & without blank Date and Place fields.
Anyway, why is bur. 1814 and bur. 1818 shown in blue boxes at the top?

A blank death displayed for me, but took a few seconds to display after I entered it.

Yes, but you have not got a Burial event like Simon has in both his examples, and confirmed in both the Property Box and blue box atop the Focus Window.

If you don't want the Note to be displayed at all, click Customise View at top right of the Focus window (or use Tools>Preferences>Focus Window) and untick Notes.

Thanks for all the replies.
I have solved one part and that is I have unticked "Notes" in the "Customize view". However the Died / Burial problem remains.
Follows are some more screenshots.
In the first you can see the the Betty's father John shows the burial. However in the 2nd screenshot where John becomes the Focus individual the Burial disappears and a blank Died is substituted.
You can see in the facts that there is a blank Death. In the 3rd screenshot below I have removed the blank Death fact and the Burial now appears in its place. Should there be blank Death facts appearing in all my records?
Also recently I changed all my Baptisms to Christenings as that is technically the correct term unless the person is an adult being baptised. I did this by doing a 'Find and replace' in the gedcom file, replacing BAPM with CHR. An example of the gedcom for an individual with Chr and burial dates is :-

The 1 DEAT Y is likely to be the problem and must have been imported from anther program as it's not something FH would ever add. If you delete it you will get the results you are expecting.

Try using the fhugdownloads:contents:blank_death_finder|> Query:Individual ~ Blank Death Finder to remove them.

Sorry to contradict you Jane, but that is a perfectly valid blank Death event as per the Gedcom Standard 5.5 and IS produced by FH when there are no subsidiary Date or Place fields. The format 1 DEAT Y is an absolute requirement of Gedcom honoured by FH.

However, the posting raises several topics:

1. Baptism v Christening
   Most Church Parish Registers, certainly before 1837, record Baptisms and not Christenings.
   Unless you know what you're doing and have backups it's dangerous to edit the Gedcom file.
   Instead use the Change Any Fact Tag Plugin that has buttons to swap Baptism and Christening.
   BTW: There is also the Christening (adult) standard event.
2. Blank Death Events
   It is perfectly reasonable to enter blank Death events, as everyone has to die eventually.
   Your 1 DEAT Y entry is perfectly valid, but what comes after that?
3. 2 _PRIM Y Tags
   It appears that your Gedcom has been imported form another product (perhaps Legacy).
   Did you get an Exception Report when you imported, and did you take any notice?
   Those 2 _PRIM Y are not valid in FH and need to be removed.

   When all import problems are resolved, does the Focus Window problem still exist?

Thanks for the replies.
Yes I had previously used Legacy and this seems to have been the problem, but it only seems to have appeared in the upgrade from V.5 to V.6 ?? unless I just didn't notice it before but I don't think so.

I also found that that undated death records had been addressed before, topic thread :-

(I didn't find this when searching topics initially, but found it via Google.)
So I have downloaded the Empty Facts tool and deleted all the empty death facts.
I also deleted the '2 _PRIM Y Tags'.

All seems to be OK now but I will have to be more careful in future.

That Burial date anomaly in Focus window? (12876) posting is nearly two years old and FH has been updated several times since then. The complaint reported to FH about blank Birth and blank Death being handled differently in the Focus Window appear to have been fixed now in Version 6.2.5 that I am using. I simply cannot recreate your symptoms with blank Death events.

I did ask before that you double check you have latest Version 6.2.5 by using Help > About Family Historian but got no reply, so can you check now please.

As I only upgraded from V.5 to V.6 on the 12 July so I presumed that the download would have been the latest version but apparently not so as it is 6.0.0. I will update tomorrow as it is now evening here in Tasmania.
