Project Window Page

Post by Vamp » 25 Jul 2017 07:42

I am not sure which forum to use so if I am in the wrong one sorry.
I have about five copies of the same family tree from various different years on the project page and don't know how to get them off of there. I don't know how I managed to get these copies but would like to get rid of them. Any help would be appreciated.

Jan,

do you want to delete the projects completely, or just render them invisible?

If you want to delete them completely, in the Project Window select each project in turn, then select More Tasks; you'll see an option to delete the project (if you're not absolutely certain you want to delete a project, I recommend doing a full backup first and placing it somewhere you won't forget, just in case you later realise you wanted to go back to it; or move the projects as described below).

If you want to keep the project but just not see it in the project window, move the project folder outside your current 'location for projects' using Windows Explorer; the destination folder could be a sub-folder of your 'location for projects' or somewhere else entirely. You can always use Browse for Project (again, uner More Tasks) to find one of these projects tucked away out of sight and open it.

The problem I have is that they are the same as the project I am working on so if I delete them they delete all the work I have on the current tree.

Can you post a screenshot of your project window please, and the folder structure of your default project location? If they're showing up multiple times, they are probably multiple copies, but seeing the screenshots will help us help you.

Jan, how do you know they are "from various different years" and how do you know that if you "delete them they delete all the work on the current tree"?

Hi Mike
I have tried deleting one and then had to use my last saved file.

Jan, we really need to see the screenshots I asked for.

Also, you didn't delete the default project did you?

The default project will be shown with a tick against it; if you don't have a project with atick against it, you don't have a default project.

Can you share a screenshot of the contents of C:\Users\Mum\Dropbox\Family Historian Projects folder?

Do you use Dropbox on multiple PCs to access these files?

At the moment I don't use dropbox although the file is there. I have only used the programme with one other computer and that was for one month.

Jan, I suspect what you've done is use File > Backup/Restore > Restore Backup on FH Project Backup ... files for the same Project.

That will restore the backup in a completely separate Project but with the suffix (2) or (3) in the case of ALLFAM1...
For Hawkes Bing Ing... you have restored the Project to get suffix (2) then deleted the original Project with no suffix.
Then you have restored the Project with suffix (2) to get a second suffix (2).

The Project you update last has the latest Last Updated date, and is perhaps where you are getting confused.
e.g.
You Last Updated the ALLFAM1_2011-03-02 on 09/04/2013
In 2013 you restored its backup to create ALLFAM1_2011-03-02 (2) but updated it most recently on 21/04/2017
In 2013 you also restored a backup to create ALLFAM1_2011-03-02 (3) dated 13/03/2013 but that is post dated by the original Project with no prefix.

They are all completely separate uncoordinated Projects.
If you have been updating different ones at random, thinking them all the same, then each one will hold different updates.
The question is which one holds your latest database that you want to move forward with?

You should be able to Delete the others with similar names, unless they share Media files.
So please use Tools > External File Links and confirm that only Project Data Folder - Media is mentioned, and that C: - Users makes no appearance (nor any other disk drive letters). Repeat for each Project. Post screenshots here if you like. BTW: You can attach up to 3 image screenshots directly without inserting them into a docx file.

P.S. Why did you have to use your last save file? What was missing?

I would advise you overhaul your Projects. There appear to be far too many. No wonder you are getting confused.
Identify what is really needed and Delete the rest (after a full backup if you feel that is necessary).

I tried to delete one of the files and found that it deleted all of the work that I had done after the date of the deleted file so I had to restore a back up file which made things worse. I will follow your instructions and hopefully get back where I should be. Thanks

Jan, I have not given you any instructions to resolve your problem.
I am trying to understand how you have got into this predicament.
Do you understand the point about restored Projects adding the suffix?
Is my guesswork anywhere near what happened?
