Diagram layout

Post by rob forsyth » 10 Jul 2017 17:26

How do you prevent a relative being duplicated elsewhere (connected with a dotted line) if you think the subsequent layout is illogical and not space saving? I have attached the tree concerned and ELIZABETH McGlashan McGREGOR would be better to remain where she first appears and husband be added there then descend down.

Hello, welcome to FHUG.

This appears to be an All Relatives tree whose root person is one of the descendants of Thomas Irvine and Ella Barclay Napier. Because of the nature of this type of tree FH has to allow room for a potentially unlimited number of generations of ancestors in all branches. In your case Elizabeth McGregor's husband James Galbraith Irvine has no ancestors displayed, so to a human eye it would indeed be more sensible for them as a couple to be placed together where she first appears. But if you then added any ancestors of James Galbraith they would not fit. FH follows an automatic procedure of placing male ancestors on the left in each couple, and because it also has to allow room for each male ancestor to have earlier generations displayed above them it has to place the couple where they are.

You would probably get a more sensible looking result by using a Descendants diagram with either John McGregor or Margaret Stuart as root (or both, as a root couple). You would then need to use Diagram>Insert into Diagram>Ancestor Tree and select Ella Barclay Napier as the root of the inserted Ancestor tree, so that her parents are displayed. (They are the only people in the diagram who are not descendants, or spouses of descendants, of John McGregor and Margaret Stuart.) You can move the inserted tree into a suitable position and should be able to overlay her two boxes so that the result looks like a single tree. Then save the diagram as a Family Historian Chart. However as soon as you add any extra people to your file the tree may shift and need adjusting again.

Rob,
I am sure this is possible.
Try this:-
Delete all people below the right hand appearance of Elizabeth McGregor so that the proxy lines disappear along with the Irvines, Forsyths etc. that descend from Thomas Irvine/Elizabeth McGregor.
On the remaining diagram use the movement control feature to move the remaining Elizabeth McGregor box a little to the right to give space for what follows.
Then to the remaining diagram add a descendant tree of Elizabeth McGregor
On this added descendant tree use the move spouse box feature to move Thomas Irvine to the right of his wife Elizabeth McGregor.
Move this added tree so that the two instances of Elizabeth McGregor overlap.
Reduce the size of the top instance of Elizabeth McGregor's box and using the "diagram" "order and grouping" command and then send the reduced size box to the back so that the full size box is now visible and the reduced size box is hidden.

You may need to move some of the other branches about a bit to avoid overlaps but as I am unable to produce a diagram exactly like yours I cannot be sure.

There may of course be an easier way which another person may suggest but this is my best shot for now.
