* How to underline Given Name Used on Diagram

Hello Everyone.

I am working hard to improve my Diagrams on Family Historian adding Test Scheme, backgrounds, etc.

But I am not getting one important thing for me.
In Germany it is very usual for people to receive many given names.
But only one of them as the actual given name used during their lifes.
So Johann Wilhelm Friedrich Schmitt could be konly know as Wihelm during his life.
To make this clear genealogists usually add a underline to the Wilhelm keeping the bapstim full name.

How can I add this underline to Names in Diagrams?
As a rule I always add full name as "Primary Name": Johann Wilhelm Friedrich Schmitt
And in the "Given Name Used": Willhelm
Can I create a formula (logic) to search for this "Given Namen" and underline it in Diagrams?
I manage so far to check if there is a Given Name used. If so it is displayed first, than I add the surname after it.
And on the next line I add full name. It looks terrible in my opinion...
I really would appreciate underlining the Given Used Name within the Full Primary Name...

I have moved this from the General forum to the General Usage forum, because the General forum is for discussions of matters not directly connected with Family Historian.

Unfortunately I don’t think it is possible to selectively underline a name like that. (Someone else might come up with an ingenious solution!)

I use a text scheme in which the Given Name Used is shown in brackets on the line below the full name, as shown below. The code for this is (%INDI.NAME._USED%)

Another possibility is to enter the Given name Used in capital letters to make it stand out, but then of course it would appear in capitals throughout reports and in all other contexts.

You can underline specific text in a Text Scheme by using the <Font Change> item.

Place a <Font Change> item with Underline selected prior to the %INDI.NAME._USED% item.
Place a <Font Change> item without Underline after that item and prior to a %INDI.NAME:SURNAME% item.

In the settings for that %INDI.NAME:SURNAME% item, untick Start on New Line so it follows on the same line.

Then it will display GivenName SURNAME

However, I have not yet worked out how to embed the GivenName within the Full Primary Name, but perhaps with the above ideas you can work it out.

This is a good example of where a Plugin called from an Expression would be useful, as requested in Wish List Ref 547 Run Plugins via Expressions. i.e. The Text Scheme Item Expressions would call a tiny Plugin that examined all the NAME fields and returned appropriate name parts.

Mike, in this case I would regard Tony as a Nickname rather than Given Name Used, because it is a diminutive of the (first) given name. I think the original question is probably about selecting one name from the list of unabbreviated Given Names, to indicate that the one used is not the first in the list.

Like you, I can't think of a way of embedding the underlining within the full primary name.

Lorna, I agree in general, but there is nothing in FH that forces the Given Name Used to be one of the Given Names.

It is a pity that =TextPart(...) only allows comma separators, because if it allowed a choice, and space was chosen, then each Given Name could be extracted as a separate item and compared with the Given Name Used.
The items must be in pairs, one returning the Name if it does match, and the 2nd returning the Name if it does NOT match.
The 1st item would be preceded with an Underline <Font Change> item and the 2nd with a normal <Font Change> item.
All but the very first item would untick Start on New Line so they all sit on the same line.

I have tested it with commas instead of spaces separating Given Names and it works well.

A lot of good suggestions here.
Nevertheless as long as I have understood, there is currently no option to pick up one of the given names to be underlined.

I agree with Lorna, I see Tony more as a nickname. I agree sometimes the nickname is so strong that I could even consider it as a given name, but it is not how I deal it.

My Great-grandfather was named Alexander Rudolf Franz Schröder. He used Alexander as the Given Name Used.
Everybody knows him as Alex Schroeder. He signed always like that, documents show Alex, but I still consider this as a "strong" nickname.
