Lost query

Post by jclifford » 21 Jun 2017 09:41

The main hard drive on my computer has recently crashed and I have had to re-install Windows and Family Historian on a new drive. All my project data is OK because I kept it on a different drive (as well as a backup on the crashed drive). I am using FH version 6.2.5.

In the past I have made a lot of use of a query called "Spouses". Now it is not listed in Standard Queries and there is nothing listed under Custom Queries (but I am sure I did not write Spouses myself).

I have tried searching the FHUG Knowledge base and found a custom query for listing spouses of descendents but the query I was previously using listed all spouses of males with a particular surname.

Can anyone help?

I have just looked again at the list of Standard Queries and realised that there are several not showing between "Sources for Given Record" and "Witnessed Events". It seems to be a scrolling problem.

Everything you have described is normal for a clean install of FH V6.
There are no Standard Queries between Sources for Given Record and Witnessed Events.

Your problem is related to all customised settings of Diagrams, Reports, Queries, Fact Types, Plugins, etc, etc.
So View > Custom Queries and all other custom entries are empty, and you may well discover other things no longer work the way they did before.

I am surprised you have never spotted any discussions of the Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings Plugin.
Download it NOW and use it every time you make any customisation changes.

I have scoured the Forums and Knowledge Base and my own Custom Queries and cannot find a Spouses Query that is filtered by males with a particular surname, so we will have to start from scratch.

Is the Attachment Spouses query anywhere near what you need?

Thank you very much Mike.

I have installed your plug-in and will look at how to use it. I presume that it would not have helped if I had done full project backups more often?

I think it would be better to start again rather than try to modify the Spouses query you sent.

If I remember correctly, the query I used was basically a list of all marriages in the database filtered by husband's surname. The left hand column contained clickable icons to open the property sheet for a marriage.

Other columns contained the marriage date, husband's forename, husband's birth date, wife's maiden name and wife's forename. Because one could sort on each column it was invaluable for identifying wives in census records, particularly in conjuction with the new GRO online index to identify mother's maiden names.

But I still do not understand where this query came from. My memory is that when I first started using FH there were a number of items listed as custom queries, but perhaps this is a false memory.

I have had FH since V2 and they never ever have any Custom Queries, only Standard Queries.

It is not exactly clear what is opened when clicking the left-hand column.
Sounds like it is the Property Box for a Family record couple (who may not actually be married).

If that is the case, then it is a Family Query.
Possibly fhugdownloads:contents:family_list_by_record_id|> Query:Family ~ Family List by Record ID is close to your needs, and you added the surname filter.
Although the left-hand column does not open the Family record.
So look through fhugdownloads:queriesfamily|> Downloads and Links ~ Query Type: Family to see if others are a better match.

I have adapted the standard query for Same Sex Relationships into a query which I have called Wife Finder - it was not as difficult as I feared.

Thank you for your help and suggestions.

Don't forget the Plugin to backup your settings.
It is one of the topics in how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers that you may have overlooked.
