Hello
I am wondering if there is advice on how to mark a person as "Provisional" - by which I mean: where I've found someone who could be a bona fide ancestor or they might not be, but they are the closest match I can find so far...
Ideally, I'd like to be able to mark each person according to how sure I am that the person is right. That way, if there was someone I wasn't sure about, we would know that we need to do more cross-checking or exploring.
Any help much appreciated.
Thank you in advance!
Clint

I use a flag for this, then assign a distinctive icon to display on diagrams. You can also add a column to the Individual Records window to display this flag and then sort on that column (just click on that column heading, or alt click to reverse the sort order). And of course you can also use the standard query Has Flag to list all those with the flag set.
To set flags, either use the All tab on the individual property box, right click the name at the top of the Record column, then on the drop down list click Set Flag, and chose the flag. On a diagram, select the individual(s), click Edit on the toolbar, then Record Flags from the drop down list.
I also use flags for "Follow Up" (for example if I've seen Ancestry hints but not investigated them yet), "New Data" (if I've down loaded some source records from the internet but not yet entered them into FH).
Just remember to clear the flags from the individuals once you've finished with them.

You can also alter Flags via Edit > Record Flags.
Often it is not so much the Individual them-self that is in doubt, but their relationship to established ancestors.
See how_to:recording_credibility_of_family_relationships|> Recording Credibility of Family Relationships for advice and related Forum threads.
In addition, where it is likely further research may be needed you could use To Do Lists as well as or instead of the above.
See how_to:create_work_in_progress_or_research_to_do_lists|> Create Work In Progress or Research To Do Lists for advice.
The simplest option is a Named List, which is much overlooked, and in Getting the Most From Family Historian it explains that Named Lists and Record Flags are often interchangeable. However, Named Lists can list ANY type of record, even in the same list, whereas Record Flags can only be applied to Individual records.
The function =IsInList(...) is the alternative to =HasFlag(...) for Diagram icons, Records Window columns, Queries, etc.
