Probably a stupid question but I cannot seem to find an answer. I was used to TMG where I could look up a place and find all events that happened there. On FH I find the Place with a number indicating the number of links - how do I get to those links to find all the events? Thanks

On the Places tab in records window if you select the place and then in the menu select View > Record Links, this will give you a list of individual records that reference those places. This is not quite what you are looking for.

Another option is to select the place as above. Then in the toolbar use the push pin icon dropdown menu and select "Map location of xxx". This will show the place on the map. Click on the location marker on the map and a list will pop up showing all the events that happened there.

There are probably other ways as well. If so, I'm sure someone else will reply to you.

In the Records Window on the Places tab, where you found the number of Links, select one or more Place names you are interested in, and run the Where Used Record Links Plugin available from the http://www.family-historian.co.uk/pluginstore.

That will list the Individual/Family record where used, and every Fact where used with its Address and local Note.

That Plugin is general purpose and works for any type of record where you want to find where it is used.

Another method is to use Tools > Work with Data > Places, select one Place name, and click the Where Used button on the right to get a Result Set list of usage, but it is not as detailed as the Plugin and only allows one Place at a time. Alternatively, click the Records button on the right to get a list of records where used, but must then search the record to find the facts where used.

From the Property Box, wherever a Place appears, click on the [...] button to the right of the Place box, and the above Place List is displayed with the Place name preselected. Click the More>> button at the bottom to reveal the Where Used and Records buttons.

This is not a correct reply (see the expert suggestions above) but since moving from TMG I have become a great user of the fh text search button.
It is called find record and has little binoculars on it.

You get a choice of where to search but none of my projects exceed 2,500 people and I usually leave all boxes selected.

If I type in a town name e.g. Mannheim, I get a list of 45 instances where Mannheim appears, including events (with the type and person shown) and any sources.
If you then click on the bar at the bottom to display Results in Results window, the records become clickable.

If you notice a familiar street name cropping up in your research, you can enter the street name - I have done that and found unrelated people on a database were almost neighbours e.g. on the 1939 Register. Searching for an exact address with a house number will bring up households from censuses.

This search (I think) is one great benefit of moving from a TMG database to a gedcom based genealogy programme.

Yet another method is to use Tools > Work with Data > Places, select the place of interest and then click Where Used on the right. In the results set you can double-click on the Place name in any row and the Property box will open with the focus on the fact which references the place.

Similarly if you use the plugin mentioned above by Mike, you will find that in the results set clicking on the Record Where Used in any row opens the relevant Property box, while double- clicking on the Field Where Used shifts the focus to the relevant fact.

As you can tell, there are often many ways of doing something in FH!

Another option is to use a Query for all facts with a PLACe filter e.g.
And If %FACT.PLAC>%
value placename.

The advantage of this is you can build up whatever columns you want and a more flexible filter.

Further the reply from BillH, if you have the map window open, tick the box against any place to put its marker on the map, then when you click on the marker, a small dialogue/popup box opens which lists all the people and facts that use that place.

Mike - I know nothing about this original poster and I appreciate all you do to help people like myself who come new to fh.

As you know, I owned fh for years before finally getting to grips with it and I know elderly women researchers like myself may be dipping in and out of software trying to make up their minds what to do -or even whether to move from TMG at all. It is summer - women have families and may be outdoor pursuits. Our minds may be on other things. Or we may have health problems.
I couldnt afford to be defeated by fh as I had to create a new project - for which I wanted unicode and stability. But most of my previous work is still in TMG and I think you are going to find a lot of people who make an effort to use fh, give up, then come back - They are exasperated by computer talk and the ending of TMG.

But you are doing great - I dont think you should feel your assistance has ever been wasted.

These discussions don't just help the original inquirer. I dipped into FHUG today in a spare ten minutes and found this thread. I have learned something new and useful, even though i have used FH for some years, and have been involved in computer software for decades. So thanks everyone.

I'm also guilty of asking a question then getting carried along on the 'wave of life', with other responsibilities getting in the way of my 'interests' before I can get back to view the forum.

When I do get some 'me time' I really appreaciate its all there for me to take on board. A big plus is the fact that we can return to it time and again..

The plus is, someone asked the question and a number of helpful 'experts' offer an answer.
