Re: Computer update
I have Win10 and all of my programs installed on C: (an SSD) and it takes up just under 91Gb. There is virtually no data stored on C:, and Windows and programs ran noticeably faster with them on an SSD.
All of my data (including FH Projects) is stored on D: (a 1Tb hard drive), then backups are made to an external USB drive, an external network connected drive in another part of the house, and to the cloud.
I assume that your "expert" is going to do a clean install of Win10, not just an upgrade from 7 to 10, but do check with him. Doing an upgrade won't put right any problems you might be having with Win 7, and might just make the PC worse!

Re: Computer update
Thank you Mike, now I'm getting the hang of it and my pc man agrees with you on the ssd drive so will carry on using it as the C drive for Win 10 and the E drive for photos, media, etc as you and the other guys suggested. Yes my man is doing a clean installation of Win 10 too.

Re: Computer update
Do you mean this FHUG site? (If so I assume you sent the above post from another device).
You don't need a registration key for FHUG. Just your user name and password.

Re: Computer update
The FH site itself is at http://www.family-historian.co.uk/ and does not require any sign in or log in. I suspect you mean you are trying to install the FH6 software.
How did you originally acquire FH6? Did you buy it as a download from the FH site? Was it an upgrade from an earlier version? Did you keep a copy of the installation file? If not you will need to contact FH support as explained here: how_to:family_historian_licence_problems|> Family Historian Licence Problems. You will need to give them as much information as you can about when you made the purchase and what your email address was at that time.

Re: Computer update
John, back about 31 May and 1 June we established that:
Then install the latest free download FH V6.2.5.
What exactly are you doing - you seem very confused between websites and PC programs?
- You had the upgrade_fh5_to_fh6.0.0_dl.exe installation file and confirmed that is the one to use
- You had the "registration ID and key for FH5"
- You found the FH V6 ID and key "in my e-mail file as Family Historian 6 Upgrade From 5 Licence Details which Calico Pie sent me"
Then install the latest free download FH V6.2.5.

Re: Computer update
The file that installs the v5 to v6 upgrade is called "upgrade_fh5_to_6.0.0_dl.exe", and when you run that file it should ask you for your v5 and v6 registration keys. It will then, by default, install the FH program on your C: drive.
Also, to run that file, you should right click on it and select Run as administrator. That can help with some file permissions problems that some people have experienced when moving to Win10.

Re: Computer update
John,
As I understand it, you cannot use the free trial to then upgrade it to a full version. If you haven't got the original installation file that I mentioned in my previous post, you will need to contact whoever you purchased it from, as explained by Lorna.

Several of us have told you repeatedly to install upgrade_fh5_to_6.0.0_dl.exe that on 31 May you said you had saved and posted a screenshot listing it. See Re: Computer update Wed May 31, 2017 3:08 pm and the following reply or two.

Re: Computer update
I'm getting too old for this technical stuff. I think I'm ok now as Calico Pie sent me a new download link and id details and I installed the program and updated it successfully. Then I restored the FH and AS settings and it looks OK now.

Re: Computer update
John, the important thing to do now is to save that download (upgrade_fh5_to_6.0.0_dl.exe) and the FH V5 licence and the FH V6 licence onto your external HDD, to form an installation archive, because you never know when you may need to re-install FH again.

Re: Computer update
Yes Mike thats a good idea and as well a reminder that I mustn't use the trial version to start with!
