Is it possible to show persons listed by their alternate names in the Individual records list?
In alphabetical order; a) by main name and b) by alternate name.

Yes, just customise a Column for each Alternate Name.
See how_to:customising_record_window_columns|> Customise or Print Records Window Columns.
The Expression needed will be %INDI.NAME[2]% for 1st Alternate Name, and %INDI.NAME[3]% for 2nd Alternate Name, and so on.

Just click on the column heading to sort the surname according to the chosen Default Sort Direction, but remember empty names will sort Ascending before actual names, so sort Descending is sometime more convenient.

Also, if you are sorting to find names, then often it is easier to simply use the Last Name Filter at the top which searches in both Primary Name and Alternate Name fields by default.

Another option is to download and use the "Search All Possible Names" which if you leave the search fields blank will return a list similar to that produced by TMG.

Thanks again, and I asked the same question over a year ago.
Still the FH list is not as helpful as the name/index list in Legacy9 and RootsMagic where the _same column_ has _both_ the birth name and married name sorted alphabetically.

Have you tried the Search All Possible Names Plugin with blank search boxes as advised both times?
That lists everyone by Primary (Birth), Married & Secondary (Alternate) names in a single Surname sorted column.
Clicking on any column heading will sort any column.
By using the search boxes initially, it can also filter by Given Name or Surname.
Double left-click on any Record to open their Property Box.
