Marry/merge individuals with known record ID's

Post by Herman » 15 Apr 2017 09:45

1. Is their a way that I can marry individuals if I know their record ID's?
2. Is their a way that I can merge individuals if I know their record ID's?

I have thousands of records from a voters roll which was transcribed into excel en then converted to gedcom. When a female's married and maiden surnames were given then they were married to PN (say) Smith. The Pn Smith may then be shown as Peter Smith (based on the same address and more or less the same birth year). I though it might be possible to then merge the Pn Smith and Peter Smith based on record ID's and the marry him to the female based on her record ID or possible marry them on the same address and birth year.

Yes, you can do both of those quite easily.

It would be wise to use File > Backup/Restore > Small Backup beforehand just in case!

Merge Individual Records
  1. Select the Individual record you want to become the master (in this case probably Peter Smith).
This is easiest in the Records Window where you can search by Name or Record Id.
  2. Use Edit > Merge/Compare Records and in Select Records To Be Merged dialogue select the other Individual record.
  3. Click OK and in Merge Records dialogue ensure all data you want to retain has Action to Merge, Keep or Add.
Click on the [+] expand buttons where necessary, click Help for advice, and only click Merge if you are entirely satisfied.
Marry Individual Records
  1. Display the Individual to be married in the Focus Window which will usually also show their Property Box.
  2. Click Add Wife/Partner in Focus Window or Add Spouse/Partner in Property Box and choose Link Existing Record.
  3. Select the partner by Name or Record Id in much the same way as in merging above.
BTW: Are you still running FH Version 5 or did you upgrade to FH Version 6?
