Family Historian User Group

I am following guidance from "Getting the most of Family Historian5" (even tho I have version 6!) but I have not got any Samples available to me. The only option that I have from the Project Window/More Tasks/Samples is to "Reset Sample Project". I have done this but I still cant access any samples. Can anyone help me?

The version of FH that I am using is and upgrade from version 5 which was an upgrade from version 4.

Version 6 does not include the tutorial files and the book for 6 has been completely re-written, how ever you can download the tutorial files from

under the book tab. Just download and extract all the files to a location of your choice.

Thanks. I have successfully downloaded the files and extracted them but I am getting the same message. Is there some part of FH that I need to set so that it knows where these files are?

If I right click on the file that I want i can open it but I am not sure that that is the best way to deal with this problem.

The instructions on that FH Archive Book tab say:

To use the Tutorial files simply unpack the zip file to a folder with in your documents folder and open the files with Family Historian by double clicking on them.

They do not get incorporated into the Samples commands as they did with FH V5.

As the Book Getting The Most From Family Historian 5 says:

These tutorial files are all 'standalone' GEDCOM files – that is, they do not form part of a Family Historian project.

The confirmation about how the Tutorial files are handled is just what I wanted to read Mike.

I seem to remember Simon commenting that the V6 book just uses the sample Project as is for it's tutorials.
I have had the book for a while but not gotten around to working through it yet.

That is correct John, the V6 Book does not need separate tutorial files, as it uses the Family Historian Sample Project.

So, would you recommend getting the FH V6 book?

In particular I am looking for details about merging/comparing files from different sources?

Someone with the FH V6 Book can confirm, but I suspect its Chapter 19. Projects: Compare, Merge, Split, Copy & Export is much the same as the FH V5 Book in Chapter 15. Compare, Merge, Split, Copy and Export GEDCOM Files.

Not sure what you mean by different sources, but I guess you mean exported from other genealogy products.
In that case first follow the how_to:index#importing_to_family_historian|> Importing to Family Historian advice for that product to get a clean & tidy Project before merging with your clean & tidy master Project.

In this case I am looking at using sources from (a) my wife, who has been using FH5 to research a different part of my tree with some small overlap; and (b) from a web based tree that may be completely different to mine in parts.

I prefer using a book for information as I can have it open at the same time as FH since I understand that the merge/compare process opens 3 panes. I know that I can flit back and forwards between FH and the web but on this occasion I will not be doing so. However, I will definitely be using the knowledge base information to prepare a clean file as my "current" file before I start.

There should be few problems with importing V5 into V6 and then merging.

Use the KB advice for importing from a web based product into V6. There is both specific advice for certain products, and generic advice to repair common residual problems. Once it is neat & tidy then you can merge, but beware that the tree may not be ratified with sources and Media images may have to be downloaded separately.

The KB Merge/Compare page probably has more pragmatic advice than the Book.
You can use File > Print to get a hard copy of any KB page.

The most common mistake users make is forgetting to merge EVERY record type by checking each tab.

The best location to install the V5 Tutorial files is C:\Users\Public\Documents\Calico Pie\Family Historian\Tutorial Files\.
There they will be included in the Backup and Restore FH Settings Plugin.
This advice will be added to the KB.

I have just had a quick check on V5 and V6 books and the chapters mentioned by Mike

I have not read both just had a glance through them. They are not exactly the same there are changes in the respective chapters. One needs to look at them both in more details to see what the differences are.

I haven't been able to read either book! Will have to try and find time to do so
