Victor,
Following David's comment re his latest version (6.5.8), i did an update check and I too received 6.5.8. Would be interesting to see what happens if you do a re-check. :D

NB The version history you see in the above link is not as up-to-date as the version history contained in the latest CC User guide PDF download, which is up to version 6.5.7! Despite my having 6.5.8

Trouble is I can't find where that diagram is.
Unfortunately I did not use FH link to download the Charting Companion. That was my mistake and probably paid more for it

I should have used the FH link

I can't recall what the FH price for Charting Companion is but I think I paid more than was available on FH.

Hi Forum

I believe there are some posts from me on this topic gone missing. Anyways latest version is now 6.5.9.

Having now sampled some the charts I find the print quality rather poor, and experience chart scaling issues when printing to A3 media. Anybody else having such issues?

Here's an example of FH chart versus CC chart output quality. The CC chart actually prints this way even when using Photo Glossy paper and Photo quality output. Quite disappointed in the CC quality.

David,

Just one suggestion as I'm not particularly familiar with the software, but have you tried adjusting the font settings (smoothing option) in Charting Companion? See screen capture below.

If you haven't don so already, I would also suggest downloading the Charting Companion User Guide from the Progeny Website.

Hi mashby

Um, the plot thickens - that option you point out does not exist in the Ancestor fan chart, I can see it in the Descendant version of the Chart. I will try it out anyway and post back the results. Then report the missing function to Progeny. Thanks for the suggestion.

He are 3 x examples of the Descendant Fan Chart using settings from the Font tab for Smoothing of Default (25), 0 and 100:

That threshold seems to effect the scaling more than the smoothing. In order of appearance:

David,

I've just had another 'play' with the software and the on-screen appearance does seem to vary with the zoom level chosen, i.e.

- at 100% everything looks 'normal' (for me)
- reduce significantly below 100% and Font starts to increasingly miss-align on screen, as shown in your images
- increase significantly above 100% and Fonts look O.K., but curved and angled lines start to appear 'wavy'.

This could possibly be more down to screen resolution effects rather than a software glitch; but that doesn't, of course, tie up with any difference in quality between any on-screen display of similar diagrams by Family Historian and this software.

The true test would probably be whether these appearance issues are carried over to either printed or PDF output. I would guess: "probably not", but haven't gone any further with testing yet.

Hi Mervyn - I will print out the Descendant Fan Charts examples - if they follow what happened with the Ancestor Fan Chart, I suspect they will be of poor output quality. I'll come back on this as I can't do it right now.

FYI: The FH output of Diagrams & Reports in PDF is far higher quality & resolution than any of the graphic (JPG, PNG, etc) formats. CC may have similar quirks.

I have created a how_to:charting_companion|> Charting Companion page under the how_to:index#intermediate_guide|> Family Historian > Intermediate Guide for Diagrams & Charts and it cross-refers to the glossary:charting_companion|> Charting Companion in the glossary:index|> Glossary of Terms.

Feel free to add whatever other advice is worthwhile, or ask me to do it for you.

I decided to buy Charting Companion to give me a few options beyond those provided by FH - and I'm getting some weird results.

If I open the FH example file, CC works - as it does if I export my live family data to a GEDCOM file. However, CC does basically nothing if I use it to open the live FH GEDCOM directly. For example, a dandelion chart simply shows the person selected - regardless of what settings I change.

Any suggestions?

Two suggestions if you haven't done these already:

1. Download the free User Manual from https://progenygenealogy.com/Downloads/ ... User-Guide
2. https://progenygenealogy.com/Customer-S ... pe/threads (Particularly see the FAQ Link)

On Tue 21st Mar 2017, David Potter posted a similar problem, which was resolved by using the Export Gedcom File Plugin set to (Std) GEDCOM Standard 5.5 export mode. I suspect selecting (-) Brief Data works best, so that unnecessary data is excluded.

See how_to:charting_companion|> Charting Companion.
