Exporting part of my Project

Post by jsphillips » 24 Feb 2017 18:09

I myself back up to a external drive and separately to a 64MB memory stick.
Recently I was asked by one member of my family to give them a GED file so that they could instal on their computer.
Unfortunately he only wanted the direct family on his computer. Also other members of family ..cousins etc did not want him to have all their data I have some 1400 members. Is there anyway of providing from a single project just a GED file of part of project. That is without having to use the split method etc ??

I have started a new thread for this as it does not really answer the original threads question.

See how_to:exporting_gedcom_with_multimedia|> Exporting a Family Tree with/without Media which describes the general technique of using the File > Import/Export > Export > GEDCOM File command.

There are various ways of selecting the records you want to export.
Do you need help with making that selection?

What genealogy product(s) do your family members hope to import the GEDCOM file into?
Depending on the answer, you may benefit in using the Export Gedcom File Plugin.

Thank you for your reply
I am happy to do this myself but was wondering the best route.
I am happy to export the Ged file
I was wondering on the quickest route. The split route is quite laborious for extracting some 40 records fron the 1400. It is a pity one cant just click on the appropiate persons and create a GED file !
best regards
John

You CAN just click on the appropriate persons and create a GEDCOM file as explained in how_to:exporting_gedcom_with_multimedia|> Exporting a Family Tree with/without Media which does NOT advise using the Split Tree Helper route except in special circumstances. Have you read and digested what that KB advice says?

You can simply use File > Import/Export > Export > GEDCOM File and click Select to invoke the Select Records dialogue, and click on any subset of Individual records you like. That is not laborious at all.

What you do after that depends on where the exported Gedcom file is going to be used, and you have not divulged that, other than saying it is going to family members, but how will they use it bearing in mind that it will be a Family Historian dialect Gedcom file that may not be fully recognised by other products.

Alternatively display a diagram which includes all of the individuals that you want, select those individuals (with judicious use of the Ctrl key you can select multiple groups by just "drawing" a box around the group, and also add individuals to the selection) then via Edit....Add to Named List... you add those individuals to a suitably titled named list. You can then use that named list in the export process.

Yes, that technique is described in how_to:create_an_export_gedcom_based_on_a_diagram|> Create an export Gedcom based on a diagram (How To).

Thank you all and Mike
Several members of my family have asked for this GED file
I think some use FTM 2012 some Roots Magic and some FH 5
I note that FTM uses date functions as "bet Jan-March""
Is this a problem
Thanks

In that case I strongly suggest you use the Export Gedcom File Plugin with matching export options for each product.
Just as suggested in the KB advice.

As far as I aware FTM accepts the standard Gedcom Date formats exported by FH.
