Box Fill with another Colour doesn't save

Post by dawnsh » 25 Jan 2017 12:30

Hello

I'm quite happy with a plain tree, simple rectangular boxes with a white fill, but I wanted to change the colour of a couple of boxes to indicate I had ordered certificates.

I can change the colour using Diagram - Format - Overide box features, save the tree but when I come back to it the colour of the previously selected boxes has returned to white.

Do I need to change a setting somewhere?

I suspect that you may not have saved the diagram. When the diagram is open goto Diagram -> Save Diagram As -> Family Historian Chart and give it a name. You can open it again in the future via View -> Saved charts. I do this to save my modified diagrams, the only problem is the sheer number that can get saved. I cannot see that the save option gives you folders so that you can group them. I need to go back and rename some to get them into a more sensible order.

Anothe roption is to save it as an external image, but that of course will no longer be automatically update with any changes you make. To do that when the diagram is open goto View -> then choose JPEG or whatever you want, you then get prompted for a location to store it.

Hope that helps.

Alternatively, you could change some data for those Individuals, such as adding a Flag, or putting them in a Named List called say Certificates Ordered.
Then not only can you identify those Individuals by that data or list, but the Diagram Box background colour can be customised to automatically change for any such Individuals.

That technique avoids the need to Save FH Charts - are you interested in how to achieve such a feature?

Thank you both for your suggestions.

I created a named list (tatewise) and added a person to it but then couldn't see how I could then change the colour of the persons box to show he was in a list.

I also changed a box colour, saved the chart as well as the tree, (dewilkinson), opened the chart but the colour had gone.

I'm going to have a rethink this afternoon as, what I thought would be an easy solution for keeping track of my certificate orders, isn't as easy.

Ok, so you have the people in the Named List but have to tell the Diagram what to do with them.

In your Diagram use Diagram > Options > Boxes tab so you can set a condition to colour the boxes.
Click <<Add Condition and choose Expression.
In the Expression box enter =IsInList(%INDI%,"list-name") where list-name is the name of your Named List, may be that is Certificates Ordered.
Click OK and then use Edit Features to choose how you want the box to appear for such Individuals.
Perhaps tick Box Fill and choose a particular colour by clicking on the button underneath.
Click OK and OK again and the boxes for the Individuals in the Named List will change.

Alter the Individuals in the Named List and their Diagram boxes will immediately change colour.

Regarding the Saved Chart I don't think you followed all the instructions.
With the Diagram open and the box format coloured use Diagram > Save Diagram and give a New Chart Name.
Thereafter, use View > Saved Charts and Open that Saved Chart name from the list.

Huge thanks Mike!

Followed your instructions and got 'named list' boxes to work. :D

This seems to be the best way forward for me now.

Still having problems with opening a saved chart with the coloured boxes but it's most probably operator error  and possibly a long-winded way of doing things.
