Expressions and Icons Again - Success?
Posted: 22 Jan 2017 18:35
Hi again
Thought I would re-visit the expressions I have used to date to display icons on a number of my diagrams and share the information……
After a bit of trial and error and building upon the advice and guidance obtained from my previous postings entitled:
Diagram Icon and Expression Problem (14395)
and
Icons, Expressions Diagrams (14373)
I have compiled some additional expressions and modified a number of my existing to see if I could achieve what I wanted. To that end I have come away from using CUR~FAMS>CENS and reverted to expressions using INDI.FAMS and INDI.FAMS[2] with different backgrounds to icons to differentiate between 1st and 2nd marriages and to try and show single and couple relationships on the various census I have discovered to date.
A typical census set for (say) 1851 would appear thus with a different background to the census icon in each case:
=IsTrue(%INDI.CENS[year=1851].SOUR>_TYPE% = "Census 1851")
=IsTrue(%INDI.FAMS>CENS[year=1851].SOUR>_TYPE% = "Census 1851")
=IsTrue(%INDI.FAMS[2]>CENS[year=1851].SOUR>_TYPE% = "Census 1851")
A marriage set appears thus:
=IsTrue((%INDI.FAMS>MARR.SOUR>_TYPE% = "Marriage Certificate (GRO Certified Copy)") and Exists(%INDI.FAMS>MARR.SOUR>OBJE>%))
=IsTrue((%INDI.FAMS[2]>MARR.SOUR>_TYPE% = "Marriage Certificate (GRO Certified Copy)") and Exists(%INDI.FAMS[2]>MARR.SOUR>OBJE>%))
It was complicated by my having a number of marriage types such as Original; GRO Certified Copy; Photocopy etc. which necessitated repeating the expressions numerous times for the various types, but I think I have achieved what I was looking for.
Many thanks to Mike Tate (Tatewise) in steering me the right direction in my efforts to get to grips with expressions.....although I am still a relative novice.
All I need now is to find a person who has a third marriage and it will require additional expression sets with associated icons to address that……I wonder if there is a limit to the number of expressions one can have active at any one time???
However, I can now display the following icons:
Birth; Baptism; Marriage (1st and 2nd); Death; Burial; Cremation.
In addition I can display the Census Icons 1841 through to 1911 and by using different coloured backgrounds to icons show whether the individual concerned was listed as single or with a partner.
The image below shows John Funnell with the following icons:
Birth, Marriage......Dark Green indicating with a second partner…..(although he was never married to the 1st); Death then Burial. The census icons for 1871 and 1881 (white background) indicate he appeared single on the census (In this case prior to his marriage) and the 1891; 1901 and 1911 icons indicate he appeared on those censuses but with a partner (In this case his 2nd as shown by the dark orange background). Emma's Marriage icon is shown with a light green background indicating that this marriage is to a 1st partner.
The next image for Richard Charles Kirk ,Harriet Swan and Sarah Humphries successfully shows the following icons for Richard:
Birth ; Marriage (to 1st partner); Marriage (to 2nd partner); Death and Burial. The 1841; 1851 and 1861 icons refer to when he was with Harriet (yellow background icons) and the 1871 and 1881 when he was with Sarah (dark orange background). The yellow census icons for both Harriet and Sarah indicate appearing on the census with their 1st partner (one and only in both cases).
Have checked the rest of my diagrams and everything appears to be working as expected so far......(Phew!)
The image below shows my first effort to compile a legend (as a jpg image) which is to be inserted onto diagrams then saved as a chart to explain the meanings of the icons I have used:
Hopefully this may be of interest and inspire fellow users.....
Might still have a tinker with icons just in case a saved chart with them when printed in black and white is found to be wanting.....also perhaps an icon for the 1939 Register......
Ho Hum
Best regards to all
