printing/saving an FH report

Post by Johnr65 » 17 Jan 2017 14:43

When publishing say a descendant narrative report, it is generated and if I press print it takes me to the print pop up, if I then set it up for the FH PDF and press OK, it shows the file name as the current project name.
Is it possible for it to give the report name rather than the default project otherwise I have to amend it each time I print/save a report for others. :?:

I think you are misreading and misusing the Family Historian PDF - Save PDF File As dialogue.

Firstly the File name box will say something like:
C:\Users\...\Documents\Family Historian Projects\Rosser 150117\Public\Descendants By Generation.pdf
i.e.
It is saving the file within the Project's own \Public\ folder, which is the normal default for all saved/exported files.
So the folder is C:\Users\...\Documents\Family Historian Projects\Rosser 150117\Public\
The filename is Descendants By Generation.pdf which is the Report name.

Anyway, just click the Browse... button and you can save it in any folder with any filename you want.

Yes, it is the use of the Print... button on the report window that causes the problem.

Yes Peter it is the 'print' option that causes the problem. As I no longer have a printer, I have to save the reports and then e-mail them to my cousins/contacts.

There is NO problem using the Print button and selecting the Family Historian PDF printer.
That is EXACTLY the same as using Save Report As > PDF File (.pdf).
They both lead to the Family Historian PDF - Save PDF File As dialogue with options as I described.
That results in a PDF file you can Email which will have filename Descendants By Generation.pdf.

I have the same result as John when using Print… rather than Save Report as… with the filename defaulting to project name rather than the desired report name.

I just happen to be using FH V5.0 now, and get the same inconsistent effect, but I am sure that with FH V6.2 the filename was the Report type in both cases, so will have to double check when back with FH V6.2.

Anyway, there are two workarounds :-
1) Use Save Report As > PDF File instead
2) Click Browse and change the File name

Using ver 6.2.2 I get the same inconsistent results as John and PeterR.

Me too with 6.2.2.

Also, even if I change the folder, the next time I use Print... it defaults to the My Documents folder rather than using the same sub-folder I had selected previously. With Save As, it remembers the sub-folder I used previously.

After a little experimentation, it appears to be more than subtle than I thought.

If Print with Family Historian PDF has not been configured, and Save Report/Diagram As > PDF File has not been used, then it defaults to the Public folder with the Project as the filename as you have all discovered.

BUT, if Save Report/Diagram As > PDF File has been used previously, then Print with Family Historian PDF defaults to the same folder and filename as the last used Save As > PDF File command.

OR, if in Print with Family Historian PDF you use Properties > Save > Configure Save Options and define Always use this folder and the File name then those become the defaults.
(If File name is left blank, it defaults to the Project name, which is what you are all seeing.)

Those settings survive closing and opening FH and logging out/into your Windows account, but using the Save As > PDF File command will overwrite the Configure Save Options. Using the Browse option does not affect any of those settings.

I suspect all the settings get reset when you Shutdown PC.
