PDF file output is not enabled

Post by Tombaston » 02 Jan 2017 15:14

Trying to save a Diagram as a pdf and I get this.
Capture.PNG
Capture.PNG (2.46 KiB) Viewed 6643 times
In FH4 there used to be Novapdf but I see on http://www.family-historian.co.uk/downloads/extras that this was only needed for FH4.1.

I have searched help and cannot find anything. I also tried to reinstall the upgrade from FH4 file in case I missed an option, but that wants to reinstall the entire program so I don't want to do that. Any ideas?
Regards

Mike,
May I comment that despite all the hard work you and others have put into the knowledge base, it is truly spoilt by the rubbish search facility! It is no use having this wealth of information, if users can't find the answer they are looking for!

If one searches for "PDF file output is not enabled" (in quotes), for example, one gets no results! If one modifies it to"PDF file output" one gets two results, both referring to Family Historian & Ancestral Sources on Crossover & Wine, which I, like most other Windows users would ignore as it is not relevant to our situation, as we don't use either Crossover or Wine.

Is there any chance that the search facilities will be improved in the near future, so it directs us to right answers, without the need of your help? It really shouldn't need you to redirect us to the correct answer if it is already in the knowledge base.

I agree the Search is not as good as it could be, but that is the way the free Open Source DokuWiki package we use is supplied.
In home|> Knowledge Base Home there is advice about search techniques ~ did you see those?

In this particular case, when I used "PDF file output is not enabled" it found the two cases you quote straight-away.
So I suspect you did not type it exactly correctly.
It is also partly my fault for not including the error message text in the FH Installation Problems page.
(I've now corrected that, but the Wiki needs to be refreshed for the search index to be updated.)
However, in defence if you search for "Save As PDF" it lists the FH Installation Problems page.
So as usual with searches, you often have to use some lateral thinking.

BTW: Anyone can edit the Wiki Knowledge Base to include any text that might make searches more fruitful.

That's my point! If one uses wrong terminolgy or wrong capitalisation, one doesn't get correct result!

As far as this error message goes however, it was generated by FH, so Simon must have programmed it into FH to trap the error, so there ought to be help available within the program to explain why the message was triggered. Perhaps even a help button within the message dialogue box!

If you find the built in search inadequate then you can use Google to do it for you.

I entered

site:fhug.org.uk/wiki/ pdf output not enabled

into my browser and the appropriate article is the third one shown the first two being about Crossover and Wine.

You can use Google to search any site for particular data like this and the search routines are usually better than the inbuilt ones.

Yes, that is the advice in home|> Knowledge Base Home.

Terminology and capitalisation does not have to be that accurate, unless you enclose it string quotes, but you must spell the words correctly.
The following both work OK since the KB has been updated overnight.
PDF OuTPuT not ENaBLED
"pdf FILE Output IS not Enabled"

As far as FH is concerned then report your suggestion to Calico Pie.

The FAQ for installation on the Family Historian main site does already have the instructions there for reinstalling the Nova drivers searching for PDF will find it.

It's not been a regular problem until recently as the Windows 10 upgrade tends to wipe out or damage all installed printers.

Operating in Windows 10, I uninstalled/reinstalled the Nova driver a while ago, but when I save diagrams as PDFs they retain the background grey stripes - which used not to be the case. Is there any easy fix for this?

The PDF Nova Printer driver has no impact on the style of what is produced in the PDF File.

That will be entirely down to your Diagram Options.
If the Diagram > Options > Print tab has Installation Settings then the PDF File will essentially mimic the screen.
On that tab untick Print background for a white background in all Diagram > Save Diagram As options including PDF File.

Is it possible that you have changed PC or are using a different Diagram Type than before and that Print tab settings is different from before?

Thank you - embarrassingly simple really! I'd changed my PC (and my printer, and my operating system) before this started happening.

If you need to change PC again then follow the how_to:family_historian_migration_guide|> Family Historian V5 & V6 Migration Guide and settings such as that Print tab setting will be preserved.
