Map window crashes

Post by Bryan Olpin » 28 Dec 2016 14:12

Hi,
Just installed Family Historian 6 over version 5, the map window crashes the program.
I'm using Windows 10 up to date, when I close the program through "task manager" its showing a 32 bit version of the program, my computer is a 64 bit windows.
Hope this makes sense, hope I can get some help.
regards Bryan

Welcome to the FHUG Bryan.

I have moved this to the FH General Usage Forum which as for "Questions regarding use of any Version of Family Historian." whereas the General Forum is "The place to chat and put the world to rights."

You are correct that FH is a 32-bit program, but that is quite common among programs, and they run perfectly on both 32-bit and 64-bit PC.

See our how_to:reinstall_family_historian|> Family Historian Installation Advice and in particular how_to:family_historian_installation_problems|> Family Historian Installation Problems under Family Historian Installs But Won't Run Properly.
If the problem that crashes the Map Window also afflicts Diagrams then try setting the default Printer to Family Historian PDF as advised in the above section, and if that fixes the problem then you need to solve a printer driver issue.

I have found Snail Driver from http://snailsuite.com/ very effective at updating drivers on Windows 10, and other members of the computer club that I run have found likewise.

Sorry I'm a bit late replying, and thanks for getting back to me, I have read your advice and will try and sort things out.
Thanks Bryan

I have just checked Snail Driver and downloaded it but got a warning message telling me 'this type of file can harm you computer' it then asked if I want to keep it or delete it.

Should one ignore the warning?

Providing you downloaded directly from http://snailsuite.com/ it should be OK.

Did the message arise as you performed the download, or when you attempted the installation?

It is probably an over zealous anti-virus package.
Can you tell whether the message comes from your anti-virus package, or somewhere else?

I downloaded directly by the link you provided. The message appeared when I tried to install it

It is a bit odd as according to a Google search, that message is usually associated with a browser download, not the install.

If you are not sure, then you could post a screen-shot here using the Attachments tab below the Edit post box.

Strange

I downloaded it again from the same hot link you provided and it installed without any questions.
