Page breaks in a book

Post by BrianNW » 22 Dec 2016 15:08

Hello everyone
I am using FH to create a book of info on a person that shows 11 generations of ancestors and I would like to put a page break into the document before each generation. I dont know if this is possible but I would really appreciate some guidance because I cant find any reference to it in the book settings or in the help file. Can anyone help me? Thanks

I take it you are using the Narrative Report, Ancestors by Generation?

Surprisingly there is no quick built-in option to put a page break before each generation. There is an option on the Page Layout tab of the Report Options to 'Start records on new page' but this won't do what you want. It applies where you are producing a report on the ancestors of more than one starting individual, and it just puts the second starting individual on a new page.

However, there is a way of acheiving what you want. Open the Narrative Report for Ancestors by Generation. Click the Options tab on the right. Go to the Format tab. The middle of the three sections in this window governs the space above and below each heading. Select Hdg Level 2 and click the Edit button at the bottom. The Heading Style window will open. The last item in this window is Keep with Next... which is be set to 1 line by default. Change this to a large number like 40 lines. Then click Apply to test the effect. (You may need to adjust this number depending on the size of font you are using in the rest of the report, as that will affect the number of lines per page.) Once you have achieved what you want, click OK and then save the report as a Custom Report Type, which you can use in future.

Similar advice is to found albeit slightly hidden in how_to:report_content_multimedia_format_layout|> Report Content, Media, Format and Layout under how_to:report_options:format|> Report Options ~ Format Tab.

Thanks very much for your help. Forcing the page breaks as suggested by LornaCraig works well. I have found useful info in the Knowledge Base as well. Thank you both.
