Re: Macbook using Crossover linking data from partition
Hi Mike, You were right they are not the same. The Books, Cache and Plugin are the same. The Settings folder is only in (1). I am attaching the media and chart screenshots numbered (1) and (2) as per yours.

Re: Macbook using Crossover linking data from partition
Yes, as I suspected. So the question is, why are they not being copied?
My first thought is that the disk partition is not large enough to accept those Media and other files.
Does anyone else have any ideas?
If you are comfortable doing it, try copying some missing Media files such as IMG_00xx.jpg from 1) to 2).
Does that succeed or fail?

Sorry no ideas other than like you insufficient space. As I said earlier I don't use a separate partition for my FH projects. Given that Jacqui found her projects in the physical place in her Mac file structure as mine I wonder if she is actually using the FAT partition?

Re: Macbook using Crossover linking data from partition
Colin, can you explain for the benefit of Jacqui and me what the significance of the FAT partition would be in this context.
I know it has a lower maximum capacity than exFAT or NTFS, but is that all?

Mike
No advantage at all that is why I said what I did. I use the Mac file system for all my data both on my desktop with the VM and my laptop with Crossover.
I can see no benefit at all in using any M$ file system with all their limitations the Mac file system is far superior.
It is Jacqui who is using the unnecessary (imho) M$ file system.

Re: Macbook using Crossover linking data from partition
Hi Everyone discussing this! I have copied over the missing data with nothing happening. With regard to not having enough disk space I can assure you there is more than enough!! Obviously something has gone missing but cannot work out how that happened. Everything was working well after the Crossover upgrade so cannot attribute it to that. Even though I cannot access the media file why is FH closing when I try to add media from the main drive (plenty of disk space remember)? Now if I try to open the project window all I get is the top bar! It is almost as though I have pac man eating away at the software. Not fiddling Mike, honest, just checking if anything had changed after copying over missing data.

Re: Macbook using Crossover linking data from partition
It is becoming a challenge to discover what is wrong.
When you now open FH, what is shown on the very top bar of the main Window?
Does it say - Family Historian Gedcom - or - Family Historian Project - ?
If it says Gedcom rather than Project then your FH Projects Location is inconsistent with the displayed database.
If that is the case then use File > File Statistics and note the File Name: full path.
Is the first part of that path where you believe your FH Projects should be located?
If it correctly says Project, then the only thing I can think of is to try re-installing FH. (Unless Colin has any other ideas?)
See how_to:family_historian_v6_on_crossover_wine|> Family Historian V6 & Ancestral Sources V5 on Crossover & Wine under Program Updates and simply install the latest free download of FH V6.2.2.
(Don't take any notice of Microsoft .NET Framework or Windows Script 5.7 as they are only needed for AS and Plugins.)
BTW: Exactly which version of Crossover are you running?
How does that compare with yours Colin?

Re: Macbook using Crossover linking data from partition
Hi Mike,
You do ask such difficult questions!
I am running Crossover 16.
On opening FH it is the GEDCOM file.
File statistics shows: C:\users\crossover\My Documents\Family Historian Projects\Family History Program - full fh.ged
which is where it should be.
Already running FH 6.2.2
Looks like a reload of FH, oh well will give me something to do over Christmas whilst everyone is sleeping off lunch!
Thanks for your help. Will let you know how it all goes.
Merry Christmas!

Re: Macbook using Crossover linking data from partition
Assuming you expect to be opening Projects, then that is definitely NOT where it should be!!!
That is why FH is saying - Family Historian Gedcom - instead of - Family Historian Project - .
Somewhere along the way you have upset the Project folder structure for that Gedcom File.
Assuming the Project name should be Family History Program - full fh then the Gedcom File should be at:
C:\users\crossover\My Documents\Family Historian Projects\Family History Program - full fh\Family History Program - full fh.fh_data\
and that folder should have at least some of those Books, Cache, Charts, Media, and Plugin Data folders.
So I advise that you review that structure and try to make it match the Family Historian Sample Project we investigated earlier at:
C:\users\crossover\My Documents\Family Historian Projects\Family Historian Sample Project\Family Historian Sample Project.fh_data\
If you double-click to open the C:\users\crossover\My Documents\Family Historian Projects\Family Historian Sample Project\Family Historian Sample Project.fh_data\Family Historian Sample Project.ged file, does it open OK?
BTW: Just because FH says it is Version 6.2.2 does not necessarily mean it is installed entirely correctly.

Re: Macbook using Crossover linking data from partition
Mike & Jacqui
I am away for Christmas and only have my phone with me so cannot help too much. I also am running Crossover v16. I can take a look via Teamviewer next week when I am home if that helps. I think a reinstall of FH is worthwhile.

Re: Macbook using Crossover linking data from partition
Hi,
Well, what can I say. After 2 gruelling weeks in the early hours of this morning I threw in the towel. I am sorry but I am too long in the tooth to spend so much time trying to understand all of this. I reloaded and reloaded and finally this morning I reloaded Crossover V16, reloaded FH V5, reloaded FH v6 upgrade and it works!!!!!! I cannot, however, seem to manage to install FH v6.2.2. but right now I don't care. I have made the decision that I cannot go on like this and either I go back to a Windows machine (ugghhh), find a new Mac based software (transfer problems) or is there another way of running this on a Mac that isn't going to send me to an early grave? I am looking at 35+ years work and thousands of people in my one name study here and I really don't want to lose any more (it appears I have lost about 2 months work) and I am too old to lose any more time tearing out my hair. You have all been wonderful and tried your best but as we do not know what went wrong in the first place I will be on tenterhooks for it all to fall apart again. As it is I will have go through and put all my custom facts back in etc. If anyone has any guidance as to where to proceed from here I would be grateful. I would be very sad to give up the best FH software.
Wishing everyone a very Happy New Year!

Re: Macbook using Crossover linking data from partition
Jacqui
I am back home now and my offer stands would you like me to remote into your Mac and see if I can help. I use FH without issues under Crossover on my Air. If you want to go ahead with this offer please install the free version of Teamviewer and then drop me a PM and I will take a look to see if I can help.
You other alternative is to run a Virtual Machine such as the free VirtualBox and then install a copy of Windows on that, this is what I do on my iMac.

Re: Macbook using Crossover linking data from partition
The first thing to do is to organise automatic backups of your FH data (set FH to automatically Save to every minute) and customisations to the cloud using a service such as Dropbox.

Re: Macbook using Crossover linking data from partition
See how_to:family_historian_on_imac_ipad_android_etc|> Family Historian on Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, etc for alternatives.
Virtual Machines such as Oracle VirtualBox need a licenced copy of Windows, but runs FH in a true Windows OS.
Presumably you followed the how_to:family_historian_v6_on_crossover_wine|> Family Historian V6 & Ancestral Sources V5 on Crossover & Wine guide which under Program Updates says how to install FH V6.2.2.
I advise you take up Colin Valkrider's offer for remote assistance via Teamviewer.
