Showing Place of Birth of Children?

Post by E Wilcock » 04 Dec 2016 09:04

Is there a way of showing the place of birth of a child either in an added column on the Focus Window list of children?

Or on the mother's Property Box list of Facts, on the Time Line birth event?

With migrant populations, the town or country of birth of a child may be the only indication of where the mother was living at that time.

In TMG the birth of each child was shown as an event with date and place on the parents' Fact list and I am missing that on FH, as I have it set up at the moment.

It's not possible to change the focus window currently, but don't forget you can see that information on the Facts tab of the property box if you turn on timeline facts.

In the Facts window it does show when a child is born when Timeline is activated, but not the place of birth which is something I readily need (I expect because I am used to having it in the equivalent of the Facts window in TMG). The plugin Quick Child Lookup does this and you can add it to the Tools menu which makes it very simple. I find this does the trick for me.

I have that Plug in - but I want place of birth of children to show the place on the Fact screen, as Jane describes.

I sometimes dont see the obvious in FH. The places of the births of the children are not shown on the Fact Screen.

And I couldnt find out where and if it is possible to add a place column?

one solution is to use witness - parent, for example - roles at the births of the children and then change the listing in the Fact tab. This does mean that these timeline facts will show all the time. For example, with a little tweak you can get this in the Fact column
Parent of <child name> born in <birth place>
The tweaking is a one-off in the fact definition but does require birth event sharing to make it show

So to summarise:
  • You can NOT customise the Focus Window.
  • You can turn on Tools > Preferences > General > Timeline Facts but in the Facts tab of parent they do NOT display Place names in the Fact pane, so you have to click on each Timeline Birth/Baptism Fact in turn to see all their birth Places, and that is no better than clicking on each Child in turn in the Focus Window to show their Main tab with Birth/Baptism details.
  • You could add Parent Witnesses to each Birth/Baptism Event as described by David and customise the Facts tab Advanced Template to include Place name, so it looks similar to Timeline Facts but with Place name. Initially that requires those Parent Witnesses to be added retrospectively, but has the side benefit of allowing their Narrative Sentence to appear in Narrative Reports.
  • The Quick Child/Family Snapshot (14401) Plugin is an attempt to plug this Place name gap.
