name a file
Good morning FHUG, could any kind member help me please, I have just bought a new computer running win 10 and have managed to load my FH version 6. As I could not get my records from my old computer, I have downloaded a backup file from my, backup disc but cannot find a way to give it a name, when i switch off is still there when I switch on, it comes up as the default file, however it does not appear in the project window, as it does not have a name, how do I rename it?
Thanks in anticipation,

Re: name a file
I am not sure what file you have recovered, if it's a Family Historian created backup, you need to RESTORE it.
Select File>Backup Restore>Restore from the menu and then select your backup file.
If you have copied on a GEDCOM file rather than doing a proper backup you will need to recreate your Project using New Project and selecting your recovered Gedcom file as the file to import.

Re: name a file
Good morning Dave.
I have moved this to the FH General Usage Forum that is more appropriate.
What type of backup are you talking about?
Is it a backup produced by FH using its internal Backup options?
That will be a Compressed (zipped) Folder (.zip) file with a name like:
FH Gedcom Backup - <your project name> - 2016-08-08 2130.zip
FH Project Backup - <your project name> - 2015-06-24 0958.zip
Is it a general pupose backup produced by a backup utility or simply a copy of your files?
Is it a GED File (.ged) with a name something like:
<your project name>.ged
I suspect it is the latter, which is just a standalone Gedcom and NOT a Project.
In FH on the very top border it will say - Family Historian Gedcom - not - Family Historian Project -.
So since it is not a Project it will not appear in the File > Project Window.
On your backup disc is that GED File in a folder structure with names that match your old Project?
See how_to:v4:understanding_projects#project_structure|> Project Structure for an example.
Did your old Project have any linked Media files?
Do you have backups of them?
Try using File > Project Window > New Project and import your Gedcom file.
However, that will NOT resurrect any missing Media files.
Please answer as many of the above questions as possible.
BUT do not experiment with copying Project folder structures without asking first, or you could destroy everything.

Hello Jane and Tatewise, thank you Jane for your reply and thank you Tatewise for your information.and can i say that at the top is the following, stokes family-V5copy-Family Historian Project-[focus window]. I have had a quick look at Simon's page but fear that i will need sometime to digest all that info,at 81 it's the short term memory that is going, but we battle on.

Re: name a file
OK Dave, so what you have is definitely a Project with the name stokes family-V5copy.
But you say it is not listed in the File > Project Window.
The reason is the Location: shown below the central pane is not where your Project is located on disk.
So the problem is not its name but its location.
How do you open that Project in FH?
Do you know where it is located on disk?
Do any Media photos you had before still display OK?
Please use the File > File Statistics command and Copy & Paste the entire File Name: C:\Users\... at the top into your Reply here.

Hi Tatewise,If I click on the F/H icon on my desktop, this file comes on fist like a default file. There is also an icon on my D /topwhich has a red/blue green tree on it,if I click this it opens F/H and the default file as clicking on F/H.

Re: name a file
OK Dave, so you have your stokes family -V5 copy Project set as the default for FH.
On your new Windows 10 PC where do you want your Projects to be permanently located?
Currently your default Project is located in G:\family historian full copy
The FH default Location: is Documents\Family Historian Projects
i.e. full path is C:\Users\<Dave>\Documents\Family Historian Projects
You have two options:
The important point is that the File > Project Window > Location: must be where your Projects reside on disk.

Re: name a file
Thank you Mike, for your excellent help, I now seem to have it fixed. The name of my project is in the project box, and I can go from there, there are also some media photo's in there. Am I correct in thinking that if I make a new folder for my photo's, and put this into the same place as my project this will prevent the project from losing photo's when I switch off?
Thank you again and for you and yours the very best wishes for Christmas and the New Year.

Re: name a file
Sorry Dave, I don't understand what you are saying about media photos.
It is NOT possible to list Media photos in the File > Project Window box.
That box will ONLY list Projects such as your stokes family -V5 copy or the Family Historian Sample Project.
What indications do you get that your Project is losing Media photos when you switch off?
How are you adding the Media photos to your Project?
How are you switching off?

Re: name a file
Hello Mike, thanks for your reply, I have the X in place where the photo's were, I go into add media then copy and paste. To finish I backup the gedcom file then the full project file.
regards Dave.

Re: name a file
You don't need to backup Gedcom and backup Full Project, because the latter includes the former.
The X means that the file path in the FH Media record is not where the file is actually stored on disc.
When you Copy & Paste the image file you correct that one Media link but not all the others.
Use Tools > External File Links to list all the Media record file paths in the File Links pane.
The ones with an X are 'broken' links caused by you moving from old PC to new PC via a backup disk.
Does that apply to all of them or only a few?
It would help to know what that File Links pane says.
Is it Project Data Folder - Media or C: - Users - Dave or G: - family historian full copy or what?
What is your File > Project Window > Location: setting for your Projects?
Armed with that information I can give you precise advise, alternatively just try using the Auto Repair Links feature.
