* All Relatives Diagram

I wish to present some relatives with a print of part of our family tree as Christmas presents and am trying to format the picture appropriately, however I have a "spoiler" problem.

My intention is to use the "All Rleatives Diagram" and maybe do a little pruning and then in a Photo processing application, put a picture of four siblings in the centre.

The problem: On my Maternal side I have two Great Great Grandmothers who were sisters - along with 8 other siblings. The diagram shows the total of 10 siblings twice - with coloured curved lines joining each sibling in the two blocks and the parents also appear twice however above that the individuals only appear once.

Is there a way in which I can automatically create the diagram with the two Great Great Grandmothers coming from the same block of 10?


I hope I have explained the little spoiler in a way you can understand. Any suggestions would be most useful as I have yet to find a way to resolve it.

You need to judiciously select and Hide the duplicate set of parents shown with no further Ancestors, and their children except the gggrandmother & spouse shown as green Ancestors.
Also Hide the duplicate gggrandmother & spouse who are NOT shown as green Ancestors.
That should eliminate the coloured ribbons and duplications.

You will then find that one of the remaining gggrandmothers is not linked to her siblings/parents.
So use Diagram > Insert into Diagram > Line twice to join them up.

That is best that is possible I believe.

Thanks for that, it does appear to be the only way!

The minor problem with the line is that it does not seem to connect to the box, unless I have a setting wrong! So, if I move items around the line does not move - I will have to "remember" those and tweak at the end before printing

Yes, you are correct about the Line, it cannot be 'grouped' with the boxes.

Have just done a quick try out working towards the finished diagram and it is starting to look promising. Need to decide who to keep in at which level. For example, nieces and nephews- yes, then Aunts and Uncles but do I keep their children (cousins) and spouses - probably not as it starts to make it unwieldy and I want something that is readable and will not cover the kitchen wall!

A bit of playing around with colours to make it a bit brighter ...

In doing this, I have one more "problem".

One of these is for an Uncle (mother's brother) and his wife. I use my cousin as the root so I can get both sides in. My Uncle's tree goes back around 10 generations, whereas my Aunt (by marriage) is only 2 and quite small in comparison. On the diagram, her tree sits "within" that of my Uncle and if possible I want to try and pull it out to te side - however, I cannot seem to do that ... is there a way?

If you attach a screenshot it would help us understand your problem.

Have you tried Diagram > Enable Moving/Resizing or + icon with arrowheads in toolbar?

Yes, I have tried the Enable Moving/Resizing and whilst it allows Up/Down, I cannot get it to allow Left/Right.

I will do a screen grab and then annotate that with what I am trying to do. It will probably be this evening before I get a chance.

I think I know what you mean by the Aunt's tree being inside the Uncle's tree.

There is an option to keep all generations together on one line of the diagram as it where. However, off the top of my head, I'm not sure if that is available in the All Relatives diagram - may only be the ancestors/descendants chart where it is available.

If it is available that may solve your aunt/uncle problem but it could also make your diagram much wider.

Here is an image ... the small block in light pink which is my Aunt's Mother, father, step-father and siblings would be better placed out to the right where I have photoshop copied and pasted them in dark pink.

Use Enable Moving/Resizing and select Box & Bar.
On the vertical line circled in red below you will find up to 3 little diamond 'handles'.
When you hover the cursor on a 'handle' or line it often becomes a + cross-hair.
Often the diamond 'handles' are superimposed on each other, but can be dragged apart up & down.
Experiment with all the 'handles', as they have various degrees of freedom.
Eventually if you like, they can all be superimposed again.

Those 'handles' exist on most lines in the diagram.

That seems to get me almost there! Just need to confirm a few exact dates and do a few small tweaks and that will be it!

I note you said originally you planned to add a picture. You don't need to use a separate photo processing application. With the chart open, right click and select Insert into Diagram > Picture then browse for the required file.
You can then drag and re-size the picture anywhere in the chart.

Thanks for the comment, I was aware of that. However, if I add the picture and then print it will resize the diagram and picture and there is the possibility that the picture may not end up as clear as it could. Getting te diagram to the right size then adding the picture is, to me, a better way to do it to ensure the best quality image.

My current challenge is to get all of the data on a large single sheet in a form it can be read!

Are you using the technique described in the knowledge base to create a single page PDF?

I can get good results by inserting a photo into the diagram, then expanding its size (click on the image and drag one of the corners). I have just tried saving the result as a large single page PDF and the image quality is fine.

In my experience that PDF technique always produces much higher quality than any of the image file formats.
